1. Introduction

Under MacOS7.5.x, 7.6.x or MacOS8.0 and 8.1, you can use the resource available on the internet to make your Mac to be able to read Chinese web page, news and Chinese email.

Because I haven't found any free Simplified Chinese font, either bitmap or truetype, on the internet, here I just describe how to make your Mac to deal with Traditional Chinese. If you know any resource for Simplified Chinese font, I will be more than happy to hear from you.

2. Prepare

  1. Download the following files from the internet
    • CLK 7.5 Updater. This is a disk image file. You need Apple's DiskCopy to mount the disk image to your desktop, or make a floppy disk.
    • Download at least one Chinese font. For example, NiceTaipei. This is V1.6. You need update it to 1.6.1. If you use MacOS8.x, you also need newer version of this font.
  2. If you are using a system version earlier than 7.5, consider to download the System7.5.3 free from Apple and update to 7.5.5. (It is possible to patch this free 7.5.5 to 7.6.1 by using ResEdit. Just change the System Suitcase version resource from 7.5.5 to 7.6, then use the 7.6.1 updater from Apple. USE IT ON YOUR OWN RISK!)
  3. If you are using System 7.6.1, then you don't need anything else.
  4. If you are using MacOS 8.0 or 8.1, you also need "LKU for MacOS8.1.0", free from Apple.

If the ifcss ftp site is busy, you may try several other mirror site.

      ftp.cuhk.hk/pub/chinese/ifcss/software
      sunsite.ust.hk/pub/chinese/ifcss
      ftp.xanet.edu.cn/pub/chinese-soft
      ftp.edu.tw/Chinese/ifcss/software
      ftp.ntu.edu.tw/Chinese/ifcss/software
      iiiafs.iii.org.tw/Chinese/ifcss/software
      ftp.ccu.edu.tw/pub/chinese
      ftp.mpi-sb.mpg.de/pub/chinese/mirror/ftp.ifcss.org/software
      ftp.fedu.uec.ac.jp/pub/china/software/IFCSS
      cnd.org/pub/software

3. Installation

  1. After mounted the CLK 7.5 Updater disk image on your Mac desktop, open the disk, and then open the folder "Support Files"
  2. Drag the following files to your system folder and the system will put them into correct location. Don't put them inside an open system folder.
    • InputBackSupport
    • Traditional Chinese
    • WorldScriptô II
    • WorldScriptô Power Adapter (For PPC users)

NOTE: Your system may already have InputBackSupport, WorldScriptô II and WorldScriptô Power Adapter installed. If this is true, compare the version of these files using Get Info and keep the newer ones.

  3. Install one Chinese font to your system folder. Usually you can drag the font to the system folder and the system will install the font into "Fonts" folder.
  4. Restart your Mac. Now your Mac is ready to read Chinese web page, news and email in Traditional Chinese.

4. Others

If you can get any free/shareware Simplified Chinese font. Then in addition to Traditional Chinese, you can also do the same thing by installing a Simplified Chinese font and the " Simplified Chinese" file into system folder.

Where is the " Traditional Chinese" or " Simplified Chinese" file after installation? These files are script files. When installed, it goes into system suitcase. After restart Mac, since the script is active, it becomes invisible even though you open the system suitcase. If you start your Mac using another hard disk with English system only, then you will see these script files in the system suitcase.

To write Chinese on your Mac, you need install Input Method. For Simplified Chinese, it is already in the CLK 7.5 Up dater, "Simplified Chinese Input Method". Just install it into your system by dragging it on to the system folder. For Traditional Chinese, you may download one from ftp.ifcss.org and install it.

What about the file "Language Kit Extension"? It is not really needed. But it won't hurt you if you install it into your system. It is used for localized application to be used in localized language such as menu items. To take its advantage, you need a language register which is only available with CLK.

If you are using Mac OS8.0 or 8.1. After finished above, you need to install the "LKU for MacOS8.1.0". Also in this updater, it comes with language register utility you can use. For MacOS8.0 or 8.1, WorldScriptô Power Adapter is no longer needed and will be deleted by the LKU updater.

For MacOS8.5, you can do a custom installation to install necessary components to be able to view Chinese web site.

If you download MacOS8.6 updater for Simp.Chinese or Trad.Chinese, you can get a lot components you can use for your CLK such as Input Method(Simp.Chinese Input, Trad.Chinese Input/Hanyin input), Chinese Text Converter and so on. Simp.Chinese Updater for OS8.6 is at here. Trad.Chinese Updater for OS8.6 is at here.

For OS9, the CLK is included in the system. You need run custom installation. If you download Chinese OS9.1 update (Simp and Trad), you can get a lot useful components such as fonts, input methods and other utilities. They are more than 90MB in size, so you have to have a fast connection.
