After it was safe to return to the beaches along the northern South Carolina shores, this is what awaited us upon arrival at the State Park Campground.. There were unbelieveable amounts of tree limbs littering the entire campground and it was hard to tell just where a campground site was located.. We were not allowed to check in to the campground till about 3:00 pm as the cleanup crews were trying to make ready a few campsites for the returning folks who had to evacuate 2 days earlier.
All the sites looked like this.. The park service crew were being helped by a group of fellows in some spiffy bright orange outfits with some black lettering on them..You had to feel sorry for all these guys as it was 95 to 98 degrees every day and the humidity was just about 100% every day.. The weather bureau said the heat index was 115 degrees for the 5 days we were there
Entire trees were blown down as this picture shows one laying across one of the interior roads
Below is another shot of the tree limb litter that was all over the place.. The M.B. campground is totally in a pine treed area with a smattering of other broad leaf trees.
Below is a shot of the tree limb litter that was being trucked out of the campgrounds. Five days later and they were still hauling debris out of the campground and the chainsaws were still being used on the heavy limbs and branches. The park service workers were stacking the cut wood that was of a size that could be used as firewood by the campers..
