Billy: I would say a song like "This Time" is a prime example of the difference of Jimmy-around/ Jimmy-not-around. If you break down the song on paper, it's literally verse-chorus-verse-chorus-verse-chorus-verse-chorus. I mean it's like a folk arrangement, and had that song been on Adore it probably would have been one verse shorter — it probably would have been prettier. This is how it happened: Wrote the song the day it was recorded. I called [Jimmy] and said, 'We need you to come in, we've got a new song.' I played the song once on acoustic. Jimmy went out to play the drums ... he's just wearing headphones, he can't see me or anything. The take that's on the record is the third take. It was a totally fresh song, so I didn't have a lot of preconception about it, but within 10, 15 minutes, he turned the song into more of an epic. It's a heavy song, but it's not heavy, like heavy-heavy. He threw the doors wide-open, and suddenly I heard this huge sound. ATN Interview, Gil Kaufman, 2000 |
