Buster Kite, familiar Santa figure, war veteran dies at 85 Remembered for humor, dedication BY LARRY GIERER Staff Writer

Santa Claus lost a loyal helper and Columbus lost a fine citizen Monday when Bernard "Buster" Kite, 85, died. The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary on Macon Road, with burial following in Parkhill Cemetery. When Pine Manor Nursing Home opened in 1967, administrator Clara Brown went looking for someone to play Santa Claus. She noticed Kite playing the role at a school and asked for his assistance. He agreed and continued to play the role there every year, including this past holiday season -- even though Kite had cancer of the kidney, lung and prostate. "I'm still getting around pretty good so I didn't see any reason not to come over and bring a little joy to these people" he said at the time. "I figure there's nothing me and the good Lord can't handle." "Because of his health problems we weren't sure about him going from room to room, as usual, but he insisted," said Pine Manor Activities Director Ruby Mixon. "He didn't miss anyone. It always meant a lot to the residents here. He was a funny, funny man." "The faces of the residents really light up when he comes," said his wife, Mae, who was serving as his assistant. Kite had played Santa long before Pine Manor came along. He worked 38 years at the local Coca-Cola bottling plant, where he retired as personnel director in 1986. It was in 1957 there that he first donned a white beard and red coat. It became a regular engagement. "It was always a treat for the children," said Coca-Cola customer development manager Wayne Griffin. "He was a jolly fellow who always had a joke. He will be missed." A big thrill for Kite as Santa was the year he "rode a fire truck and threw out candy." He called it "a big kick." Kite began work in 2003 as a court bailiff for the Muscogee County Sheriff's Office and continued working until Aug. 12. "He showed a lot of class," said Sgt. Steve Smith, who heads up court security for the department overseeing eight deputies and 42 bailiffs. "He was very dedicated," Smith said. Kite will not be buried in a Santa suit, but in military dress. He was a U.S. Marine who saw action in the Pacific in World War II. He also served as a PTA president at Jordan High and was the only grandparent elected to the PTA presidency at Britt David Elementary School. "Parents and grandparents," Kite believed, "need to show an interest in their children's education."
