Summary: Nothing like meeting the parents to make a guy nervous!

Rating: PG

Author's Note: If you're offended by alcohol consumption (in large amounts)
then please skip this story. Also, although this author has been known to
have one too many on occassion I strongly support the concept of the
designated driver and/or calling a cab if one has had too much to drink, which
is reflected in this story. Don't worry, the whole story isn't about getting drunk,
but the last part includes Lewis, Angel and company getting a bit tipsy. That said,
let's get on with the story!

Angels
Part 7 - Wonderful Tonight
by Ruth

Sunday
5:20pm
Angel's apartment

There was a knock at Angel's door. She dashed out of the bathroom to get it.
She peaked out the peephole and saw a fisheye view of a very nervous looking
Lewis. She opened the door.
"You're early," she said with a smile.
"Only ten minutes. I just didn't want to get here after your parents. They're
not here are they?" Lewis said, looking around. Angel looked over her shoulder
as she walked to back to the bathroom.
"No. They called a little while ago and said they'd be a little late," she said.
Lewis let out the breath he had been holding and plopped down on the couch. He
was dressed in his dark blue suit again with a cream colored shirt and a tie that
matched the suit. Angel had picked out the shirt and tie. Lewis shook his head
slowly. He couldn't believe he was letting someone pick out his clothes for him.
The thing was, he didn't mind it so much. Angel came back out of the bathroom
and Lewis stood up. She stood in front of him and looked up at his face.
"Did you get taller?" she asked, clearly perplexed.
Lewis looked down at her feet. "Shoes..." he said. Angel looked down at
her stocking feet.
"Hmm, yes. Those would help. I guess I'm a little nervous too," she said as
she walked off to her bedroom. Lewis stood in the livingroom, bouncing up and
down on his feet, when there was a knock on the door. Lewis froze, not knowing
what to do.
"Could you get that, Lewis?" Angel called from the bedroom.
Lewis swallowed hard. "Ok," he said, his voice cracking a little. Lewis walked
to the door and looked through the peephole. A man and a woman stood there. The
man was a bit short, about 5' 8", with blond hair and ice blue eyes. His face was warm
and friendly. Angel's father. The woman was the spitting image of Angel, or what Angel
would probably look like in 25 years. She was the same height and her hair was auburn,
but shorter than Angel's, hanging about an inch above her shoulders. She had the same
pretty green eyes as Angel and they shared the same seductive smile. Angel's mother.
Lewis swallowed again and opened the door. Angel's parents burst in and yelled "Surprise!"
Lewis looked shocked and confused.
"We're early!" yelled Angel's father. Angel's mother stopped short and looked up
at Lewis. Waaaaay up...
"Goodness!" she exclaimed. "She said you were tall but the word "treelike" never
came up!"
     "Treelike?" Lewis said.
"Oh, leave the boy alone, Maggie! 'Treelike' indeed. A little gangly maybe, but
certainly not treelike!"
     "Gangly," said Lewis flatly.
"I just meant that he was taller than I had thought he would be," Maggie went on.
"Well 'treelike' is a bit extreme," said Angel's father. Lewis watched as Angel's
parents went back and forth in this manner.
"Angel!" he finally called. "Angel, your parents are here! Come out! Hurry!"
Angel's parents were still going at it when she finally emerged from the bedroom.
"What's the hurry?" she said to Lewis. She paused and listened to her parents
for a moment. "Oh, that. They'll stop in a minute." A few more moments passed and
they did, indeed, stop.
"Angelpumpkin!" Her father said as he threw his arms around her.
"Hi, Daddy!" Angel squeeked as she returned the hug. She turned to her mother.
"Hi, Mom!"
"Hi, Sweetheart!" Maggie said as she hugged her daughter.
"Lewis, these are my parents, Keith and Maggie Donovan. This is Lewis," Angel
said in the way of introductions.
Keith stuck out his hand and Lewis took it. "Nice to meet you, Lewis!" Keith
said as he shook Lewis' hand.
"Nice to meet you too, Mr. Donovan," Lewis said.
"No, no! Keith! Call me Keith!" he said, clapping Lewis hard on the arm. Lewis
was knocked a bit off balance. Keith was stronger than he looked.
"And you call me Maggie," Angel's mother said as she took Lewis' hand in both
of hers. Everyone stood around staring at eachother for a minute and Lewis started
to grow uncomfortable.
"Well, let's get going," Angel finally said. "Lewis, will you come help me with
my coat?" Angel walked back towards her bedroom and Lewis followed. Angel
grabbed her coat and handed it to Lewis. "You doing OK?" she asked him as he
helped her on with her coat.
"Yeah," Lewis said. "They're a little overwhelming."
"You get used to it. They're good people. Just compliment my Mom a lot and
laugh at my Dad's jokes and they'll love you forever." Lewis nodded and then bent
down and kissed Angel.
"I hadn't done that yet," he grinned. Angel smiled back, took his hand and walked
with him out to the livingroom.
     "Ready?" Angel asked.
"Lead the way!" said Keith. He slapped his hand on Lewis' back, causing him to
lose his balance a bit again. Lewis smiled sheepishly at Keith as they went out the
door.

Sunday
7:52pm
Fancy-schmancy restaurant in Cleveland

Dinner had gone well, from Lewis' point of view. He had laughed at all of Keith's
jokes and complimented Maggie on her dress and earrings. Angel was confident that
Lewis had won over her parents. Then the question Lewis had dreaded popped up.
"So what do you do, Lewis?" asked Keith. That nervous lump was back in Lewis'
throat. He tried to swallow it down. He looked at Angel who gave him a look of
encouragement.
"Well..." he started, "I'm the Janitorial Supervisor at DrugCo."
"Oh, you work with Angel!" said Maggie. "That's so nice! Do you see eachother
a lot?"
"No, we tend to work opposite shifts," said Angel. "I've been trying to get Lewis
to take advantage of that supervisory part of his job and assign the night shifts to the
people under him but he hasn't so far," she finished as she gave Lewis a nudge.
"I know, I know," said Lewis.
"Take advantage of that part of your job, Lewis," advised Keith. "I scraped carcases
off the road for ten years. You better believe when I moved up to a supervisory position
that I delegated that responsibility to other people. I still go out, it's only right, but not
as much. No sir."
Lewis nodded in agreement. He was completely amazed at how laid back and
accepting these people were. Completely nonjudgemental. Good people, just as Angel
said. She obviously picked up those same traits from them.
"So what do you kids do for fun around here?" asked Keith.
"Well," began Angel, "there's bowling, we play pool, go to the Warsaw-"
"What's the Warsaw?" Maggie cut in.
"It's the neighborhood hangout," said Angel. "It's not a bad place."
"Well, then, let's go!" said Keith. "I could go for a pint!"
"More like a quart," Maggie whispered to Lewis knowing full well Keith could
hear her anyway. Maggie smiled at Keith and winked at him. Keith smiled back,
aware that she was just teasing.
As Angel's parents headed for the door out, Lewis pulled Angel aside. "Are you
sure you want to take them there? It doesn't seem like their kind of place."
     "You'd be surprised," said Angel.

Sunday
8:33pm
The Warsaw

Drew and Oswald were sitting around "their" table drinking beer as usual. Drew
was listening to the story Oswald was telling.
"So I started yelling through the wall about the noise like I didn't know what was
going on!" Oswald was saying, trying not to laugh.
Drew shook his head. "That's cruel, man." He took a sip of beer. "Interupting
the first sex a guy's had in months...cruel." Oswald was grinning ear to ear.
"Hey, what's a best friend for?" said Oswald.
"I woulda killed ya!" joked Drew.
"Hey, there's Lewis and Angel," Oswald said as he spied them coming through
the door. "Hey you guys!" he yelled to them and waved.
Lewis turned to Angel. "Great. Now we have to subject your parents to Drew
and Oswald." Angel stiffled a laugh and lightly elbowed Lewis in the ribs.
"That's not nice!" she said. "Drew and Oswald are just fine. They'll all get along,
trust me." Lewis made introductions when the four of them approached the table.
"Hey," Lewis said to Drew and Oswald. "Drew, Oswald, this is Keith and Maggie
Donovan, Angel's parents."
"Nice to meetcha!" Oswald said as he shook their hands.
"Pleasure," Drew said as he shook Keith's hand. When Maggie presented her
hand Drew took it and kissed the back. "Extreme pleasure," he said with a smile.
"Well, aren't you a charmer!" Maggie exclaimed.
"Yeah," said Lewis, glaring at Drew warningly, "'aren't you a charmer'!" Drew just
smiled sarcastically at Lewis.
"Sit down everyone!" Drew said. "Have a drink with us!" The four of them grabbed
a chair and crowded in at the table. A waitress came by and took their drink orders.
Keith was a Guinness man. Maggie liked martinis. Lewis and Angel, of course, had
Buzz Beer. They sat and chatted and a couple hours and a LOT of alcohol later,
everyone was feeling pretty happy.
"It was the best surprise I'd ever had!" Keith was saying.
"Here, here!" Drew said as he raised his mug Everyone clinked glasses and
took a sip.
"So what's the best surprise you ever had, Lewis?" Keith said, slurring a bit.
"Well," Lewis began as he raised his mug to his lips, "that'd be when I found
Angel half naked in my bed last night!" Everyone stopped abruptly. Lewis nearly
choked on his beer. "Oh, God," he said, "did I just say that out loud?"
"Yes. You did," Keith said darkly. Angel's eyes were bugging out of her head.
"Now, Daddy - " she started.
"Don't 'Daddy' me!" Keith said angrily. "What were doing half naked in his bed?!"
he shouted. Half the bar turned around in interest. Oswald and Drew began to get up
from their chairs.
"Maybe we should leave," Oswald said quietly.
"No you don't!" Keith reprimanded. "You stay right there in those chairs!" Oswald
and Drew quickly sat down, their eyes as wide as Angel and Lewis'.
"Man, I fell like I'm in detention," mummbled Drew.
     "What?!" said Keith.
"Nothing, Sir!" Drew answered. Keith turned back to Angel.
"Now are you going to answer me, young lady?" he asked.
"Keith..." Maggie said, trying to get his attention. He ignored her and turned
to Lewis.
"And YOU! What were you doing even LOOKING at her in that state?!" Lewis
looked positively frightened and couldn't answer.
"Keith..." Maggie said a little louder.
"What do the two of you have to say for yourselves!?"
"Oh, for God's sake, Keith!!" Maggie yelled. This finally got his attention. He
turned to his wife. "She's 30 years old!" Maggie continued. "They've been dating
over a month! If he hadn't seen her naked by now I'd be worried!!" Keith had no
response but the anger seemed to be leaving him. "They're two grown adults! They
can run around naked all they want!" By this time, Lewis and Angel were a bright
shade of crimson. Drew and Oswald weren't a shade too far off. All was quiet for
a few endless moments.
"You're right," Keith finally said. His voice was calmer and quieter. "You're right,"
he said again. He turned to Angel. "I forget you're not a little girl anymore, sometimes."
"It's OK, Daddy," Angel said with a smile. She threw her arms around him and
gave him a big hug.
"And, Lewis," Keith said, now turning to him. Lewis still had that terrified look
on his face.
"Yes, sir?" Lewis said timidly. Keith stiffled a laugh.
"Relax, boy," he said with a smile. "If anyone is going to capture my Angel's heart,
well...from what I see you're the man to do it."
"Thank you, sir," Lewis said quietly.
     "Keith."
"Keith. Thank you, Keith," Lewis corrected.
"Just don't blurt things like that out ever again!" Keith joked.
"You can count on it!" Lewis said with a smile.
"Here, here!" Drew said, lifting his mug in the air.
Keith looked at him. "Is that all you do?" he asked.
"Pretty much," said Drew as he sipped. "Oh! I do this too!" Drew turned toward
the bar and raised his hand to get the bartender's attention. "Can we get another
round here?" he said as he gestured to the table.
"Well, at least you're good for something," Keith said jokingly.
"Hey, wait a minute!" said Drew. "Why am I getting picked on? I'm not the one
sleeping with your daughter!" Lewis began to choke again. Oswald started laughing.
"Angel sleeping with Drew! That's good!" Oswald laughed.
"Yeah, that is pretty funny," said Drew. "Wait, no it's not! Why is that funny?"
Oswald abruptly stopped laughing.
"I don't know," he said. "Man, is it really warm in here?" Oswald was swaying a
little in his chair. "And the room seems a little jumpy tonight."
Lewis smiled sadly at Oswald. "I think it's time to put little Oswald to beddy-bye."
As Lewis stood up, he swayed a bit himself. "Whoa," he said, grabbing the chair for
support.
Keith stood up and steadied Lewis. "Easy there big fella! You're too big to pick
up off the ground!" Keith laughed and smacked Lewis, hard, on the back. Lewis,
of course, fell forward on to the floor.
"Lewis!" gasped Angel. She knelt down next to him. "You OK?" she asked.
Lewis gathered himself up and stood. "Yeah," he said unsteadily. "No problem."
Drew and Oswald were laughing so hard their faces were turning purple. Maggie was
doing her best not to giggle.
"Oh, I think it's time to call it a night," she said as she stood up, also unsteadily.
"Oh my! I think we've all had a bit too much!"
"We should get a cab," said Angel.
"No, I don't want to leave my car here!" said Drew. He put his head down on the
table. "Oh, man, how am I going to make it to work tomorrow?" Angel walked over to
Drew and bent down next to his ear.
"You're not," she said. "You're calling in sick. And you're staying upstairs with
Oswald tonight. You can drive your car home in the morning." Drew looked up at
Angel.
"God, you're smart," he said. "Lewis, how'd you get such a smart girl?" Lewis
smiled and shook his head. "I'm never gonna meet a smart girl," Drew mummbled
back into the table. Oswald got up from his chair and wobbled toward Drew.
"Come on, Drew. Time to go to bed," he said. Drew looked up at Oswald.
"Oh, I'm having that nightmare again!" he said. Oswald looked over at Lewis
who just shrugged his shoulders. Oswald went to Drew and managed to get him out
of the chair and walk him to the stairs up to the apartment.
"Is he all right?" Maggie asked Lewis.
"Yeah," said Lewis. "He keeps talking about this woman at work. He thinks
she's out of his league. It's got him down. What's her name?" he asked Angel.
     "Briana," Angel replied.
"Yeah, it's amazing what you women can reduce us men to!" Keith said.
Maggie gave him a playful smack on the arm.
"Let's get that cab and get out of here," said Angel. "I'm ready to crawl into bed."
"Me too!" Lewis said, eagerly. Keith glared at Lewis. "Uh...I mean..." Keith
laughed.
"You really have to relax, Lewis!" he said. Lewis dodged Keith's hand as he
tried to clap him on the back again. Keith pointed at Lewis. "You're getting quick,"
he said. Lewis smiled. Angel took Lewis by the hand and the four of them walked
out into the night.

Stay tuned for Part 8...
