Summary: What's that sound? Wedding bells?

Rating: PG

Author's Note: For anyone who may be confused by the Stephen King
reference, he wrote a book called "It" about a scary, evil clown. So you
can see the humor there *g*. Also, if you can find a copy of the song I named
this Part after then please do. It's really pretty. Written and sung by Sting.
And, of course, you can find the lyrics on my web site (http://www.geocities.com/fxnoir).
Oh, and one more thing...you'll notice another character, Briana, who's engaged to Drew.
She's Gail's creation and I've just borrowed her. A little cross-over of stories if you will.
(Well, Gail started it! *g*) You can find her fanfics (as well as more copies of
mine) at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Drewcareyandwhoselinefanfiction.

Angels
Part 8 - When We Dance
by Ruth

11:45am
Winfred-Louder

Lewis sat at the chair at Drew's desk. Drew hadn't been there when he
arrived so he had decided to just wait for him to get back. He was quickly
becoming bored and looking for some way to amuse himself. He started
drumming a little beat on Drew's desk with his hands. This soon wasn't
enough so he grabbed a couple of pencils and started to use those instead.
He had a pretty good beat going, hitting this and that on Drew's desk to
produce different sounds. His performance was growing in volume as he
put more energy into it. As he continued he looked up and saw Mimi staring
at him with a not-so-amused look.
"Knock it off, Freakshow, it's distracting!" she complained.
"Oh, I'm sorry," Lewis said sarcastically as he continued to beat out a
rhythm. "So I guess if I were to say, hit everything harder it'd get even *more*
distracting?" Lewis began to hit everything harder. Mimi narrowed her eyes
and stared at Lewis. Lewis stared right back, an evil smirk playing across his
lips. Drew walked up just as Lewis hit the edge of his coffee mug which
snapped the pencil, sending half of it flying across the room, just missing
Drew. The "concert" was abruptly over.
"Lewis, what the hell are you doing?" asked Drew.
Lewis looked sheepishly at Drew. "Annoying Mimi," he answered.
"Oh, in that case," Drew said as he sat in his chair, " please continue!"
"Can't. I broke the pencil," Lewis said, disappointed. He put the pencils,
or what was left of them, down on Drew's desk and sat back in the chair.
"So what brings you by?" Drew asked.
"Oh, I was doing a little shopping and thought I'd stop by to see if you'd like
to go to lunch," Lewis said.
Drew leaned forward, looking curious. "You, Lewis? You don't shop!
Angel rip the buttons off another one of your shirts?" Drew said with a grin.
Lewis smiled back.
"Well..." he said suggestively, "no, that's not what I'm shopping for ...this
time. And you should talk! Things still good with Briana?"
"Never been better! Moving in together was the perfect decision. And
marrying her is an even better one! Speaking of which, when are you and
Angel going to officially move in together? I mean, don't you practically live
together now?"
Lewis nodded. "Yeah, I don't think we've spent a single night alone in the
past 4 months."
"So what are ya waitin' for?" said Drew.
Lewis shrugged. "Actually, I guess I've just been waiting until I was ready
to do something more official."
     "Whaddya mean?"
"Well, I came here today to get this-," Lewis said as he reached into his
pocket. He pulled a small, black velvet ring box out and handed it to Drew.
Drew's eyes grew wide as he took the box from Lewis. He opened it and
inside was an emerald cut diamond solitare in a platinum setting. Or white
gold? He wasn't sure, but the diamond was huge and there were no flaws
that he could see but he was no expert.
"Wow, Lewis," Drew said, "this is a little surprising."
"Doesn't surprise me a bit." Mimi had walked up behind Drew. "Shall I
leave you two alone?"
"It's not for me, you Stephen King nightmare!" Drew said irritably. Mimi
grabbed the ring from Drew.
"Ha! I bet it's not even real!" Mimi scowled. She mysteriously produced
a jewelers eyepiece and looked closely at the rock. "Holy crap," she said quietly.
"You stole this didn't you?" Drew grabbed the ring back from Mimi.
"Gimme that!" he said. "Don't you have places to go? Children to frighten?"
Mimi scowled again and walked off to her desk. Drew turned back to Lewis.
"Lewis, how did you afford this?"
"I've had some money socked away," Lewis said.
Drew kept looking at the ring. "Where? CDs? Mutual funds?"
"No, hidden in a sock in my dresser." Drew looked up at Lewis.
"You had the kind of money that can buy this hidden in your sock drawer?"
he said seriously.
Lewis smiled. "No! It's been in my savings account. I've been saving for
years for this and that. College, car, house...nothing's actually panned out
until now." Drew closed the box and handed it back to Lewis.
     "When?" he asked.
     "When?"
"Yeah," said Drew, "when are you gonna ask her?"
"I haven't decided yet. I have to plan the perfect time."
"Does Oswald know yet?" Oswald walked up at that very moment.
     "Know what?" he asked.
Lewis was opening his mouth when Drew piped in. "Lewis is gonna ask
Angel to marry him!"
     Oswald looked at Lewis. "What?"
"I knew before you did, I knew before you did!" Drew teased as he did a
little dance in his chair. Lewis pulled the box out and handed it to Oswald.
Oswald opened it and stared.
"Wow. You're really gonna do it," Oswald said quietly.
"Yeah, I told I was doin' it," said Lewis.
"Wait!" said Drew. "I *didn't* know before him? Damn!" Oswald closed
the box and handed it back to Lewis. He looked sad.
"Well, congrats, Buddy. I'm happy for you," he said.
"You don't seem very happy," said Lewis.
"Well," Oswald whined, "I'm losing my best friend!"
"You're not losing your best friend, Oswald," Lewis tried to comfort.
     "Yeah," said Drew. "You're gaining a Best-Friend-In-Law!"
Oswald cracked a smile. "Yeah, I guess I hadn't thought of it that way,"
he said. "It's not like you're ever home any more anyway."
"I'm sorry about that," Lewis said. "It's just that our place gives Angel the
creeps. She says she keeps seeing inanimate objects moving."
"Oh, that's just the mice!" said Oswald.
"That's what I told her!" Lewis said. "Then she pretty much said she was
never coming over again." Drew slowly shook his head.
"Are we gonna go to lunch or what?" he asked as he stood up. Lewis
stood up as well.
     "Lead the way!" he said.

Angel was slaving away over paperwork as usual when there was a knock
on her office door.
"Come in!" she yelled. The door slowly opened and Kate poked her head in.
     "You busy, Angel?" she said.
     "No, come in, Kate!"
"I thought maybe we could go to lunch together," said Kate.
Angel put her pen down. "Sure!" she said. "Say, how'd you get in?"
"I used Lewis' code. There's not much security around here. Although there's
some creepy looking guy roaming around the hallway."
"Oh, that's just Simon," said Angel.
"Simon? Is he a security guard?"
"No. He's one of the 'guinea pigs'. He's currently testing one of the new drugs."
     "What's it do?" asked Kate.
"Well, it's basically supposed to make a person less creepy," Angel said
matter-of-factly.
     "It's not working," said Kate.
"Oh, no it is. You should have seen him before," Angel said.
Kate grimmaced. "I don't wanna think about it." Just then there was another
knock at the door. Briana stuck her head in.
"Let me guess," said Angel, "Lewis' code?" Briana stepped into the office
and smiled.
"Good guess," she said. She had an arm full of wedding magazines. "Time
to pick a color scheme!"
"Let's do it over lunch," said Kate. "I'm starving!" Angel was looking a little sad.
"Hey, what's wrong?" asked Briana. Angel shrugged.
"Oh, I'm just being a little selfish," she said.
"What do you mean?" Briana said.
"Oh...I just kinda wish we were planning *my* wedding."
"You wanna marry Lewis?!" Kate exclaimed. Angel gave her a weird look.
"No, I'm sorry. I guess I've just never been able to picture Lewis as married.
That's all."
"It just feels like the right time now," said Angel.
"Here's a crazy idea," started Briana, "why don't *you* ask *him*?" Angel
stared at Briana for a moment.
"You know, that's just insane enough to work," she said finally.
"Then here's my second crazy idea," said Briana. "we all blow off the rest of
the day from work, go over these magazines and then do a little 'engagement ring'
shopping."
"I like it!" said Kate. "I'm in!"
"Count me in too!" said Angel.
"Good, now let's go. These magazines are heavy!" Angel and Kate grabbed a
few magazines each from Briana to lighten the load and they headed out the door.

Saturday
8:03pm
Angel's apartment

Lewis had everything planned out. Lit candles all through the apartment, soft
music, and a greeting from him in a tux with a red rose in his hand and the ring in
his pocket. She thought he had some errands to run so she wouldn't expect him
to be here when she got home. As Lewis lit the candles in the bedroom, Angel
came home. He didn't hear her and continued lighting candles.
Angel had plans of her own. Lit candles all through the apartment, soft music,
and a gretting from her in a black nighty holding the ring in her hand. She began
pulling candles out and lighting them. When she was done there she turned to
head for the bedroom and bumped right into Lewis!
"What are you doing her?!" they said at the same time. Angel looked Lewis
up and down. He looked incredibly handsome in a black tux and bow tie. She took
in one, long shaky breath.
     "Wow," she exhaled.
"Thanks for lighting the rest of the candles," said Lewis. "Why did you do that?"
     "Oh...well...I...um...I" Angel stammered.
"Never mind," said Lewis. "Go back out and come in again."
     "What?" Angel laughed.
"You have to go back out and then come in again. It'll ruin the whole effect
if you don't."
"Ooookay," Angel said, curious. She walked out the door, shutting it behind
her. "What is he up to?" she said to herself. She counted to three and then walked
back in. In front of the door, Lewis knelt on one knee, a rose between his teeth and
a tiny little box in his outstretched hand. Angel stiffled a giggle and shut the door.
     "Lewis, what are you doing?"
"I haf sungfing ta ask yoo," said Lewis, the rose still between his teeth. This
time Angel did laugh.
"What?" she giggled. Lewis took the rose out of his mouth.
"Sorry," he said, handing the rose to her. Angel took it and only then noticed
what was in his other hand. She gasped a little. "I have something to ask you, "
he said again. Angel stared at the box. Tears were starting to fill her eyes.
     "Lewis," she said quietly.
Lewis took a deep breath. "I'm not very good at this sort of thing. Saying just
the right thing I mean." He paused and looked at Angel. Tears were starting to
flow freely down her face. Lewis cleared his throat. "The past few months have
been something I've only dreamed about. I keep thinking I'm gonna wake up and
you'll be gone and none of it will have really happened. And then I realized that
the possibility of ever waking up without you there scares the hell out of me.
You're the best thing that's ever happened to me, Angel. I love you more than
anything. Please spend the rest of your life with me." Lewis opened the box
and handed it to Angel. She took it and dropped to her knees in front of him,
crying audibly now.
"Oh, God, Lewis," was all she could say. She reached into her own pocket
and pulled out a tiny box that matched the one in her hand. She opened it. There
was a platinum, man's ring with a square cut diamond in it. "I was gonna say the
same thing," she said with a smile through her tears. Lewis' eyes grew wide as
he looked at the ring. His mouth opened and closed, trying to form words. He was
speechless. "I'll marry you if you marry me," Angel said. "Will you?"
Lewis looked at her. Tears were flowing freely down her cheeks but her smile
told him she was happy. He reached up and gently wiped her tears away. "You
gotta ask?" he said softly, smiling back. Angel let out a laughing sob and threw her
arms around Lewis. They stayed that way for several moments, on their knees,
embracing and swaying back and forth to music only the two of them could hear.
When they finally broke apart they became like greedy children, grabbing their rings
out of their boxes and putting them on. They managed to guess eachothers' size
pretty close but both would have to be taken in to be fit.
"Thank you, Lewis," Angel said. "Thank you for being in my life."
"Where else would I be?" said Lewis. "Except maybe off my knees. Ouch!"
Lewis groaned as he tried to stand up. Angel didn't fair much better.
"God, I hope this doesn't mean we're getting old!" said Angel.
"No, I'm pretty sure knees just weren't meant to be kneeled on for that long,"
said Lewis, rubbing at one of his knees.
"Well, maybe we should get off our knees for a little while," Angel teased. She
pulled Lewis by the waistband toward the bedroom. "I didn't get a chance to change
into the other part of my surprise."
"Be gentle," said Lewis with a grin. "The tux is a rental." Angel laughed.
"I'll pay for the damage," she said seductively.
"Well, in that case..." They disappeared into the bedroom together.

Sunday
4:15pm
Drew's house

The Brown's game was in full swing. The whole gang was over Drew's
to watch. Drew and Briana were sitting on the couch. Oswald had taken a
seat on the floor. Lewis was sitting in the chair, Angel sitting in his lap, her
legs drapped over the arm of the chair.
"Go, go, go!!" everyone started to yell. Drew threw his hands up in the air,
tossing the contents of his bag of chips everywhere.
     "Touchdown!!" he yelled excitedly.
"Noooo!" Kate yelled from the kitchen. She came running out with a bowl in
her hand. "I can't believe I missed it!"
"What the heck were you doing, Kate?" asked Oswald.
"I was putting the crab dip in a bowl and getting some crackers," she said.
Lewis and Angel looked at eachother and snickered.
     "What?" asked Kate.
"Nothin'," said Lewis. Angel and Lewis were definitely trying to hide smiles.
     "What, you guys?" asked Drew.
"Really," said Lewis, "nothin'. Hey, look the replay!" he said, trying to change
the subject. The guys turned back to the TV but Kate and Briana were having none
of it.
"Might as well tell us," said Briana. "We'll find out eventually anyway."
"Oh?" asked Lewis, curious. "How's that?"
"Angel will tell us and then we'll tell them," Kate said, gesturing toward Drew
and Oswald. Lewis looked at Angel. Angel nodded.
"That's pretty much how it'll happen," she said.
     "Is nothing sacred?" Lewis asked.
Briana shook her head. "Not really."
"Ok, so tell us!" Oswald said, his attention back on Angel and Lewis.
"Well, let's just say that Angel and I got hungry last night and now we have
a special place in our hearts for crab dip," explained Lewis.
     "Eewww!," said Drew jokingly.
"Hey!" said Lewis. "You've been known to incorporate food into your sex life!"
"A sex life without food is no sex life at all," mused Drew. Briana elbowed him
playfully. "Ow! Cut it out!" he said with a grin.
Kate sat down on the couch. "Crap," she said. "I forgot to bring out the crackers
and some plates."
"We'll go get them," Angel said, getting up from Lewis' lap. She wandered off to
the kitchen and Lewis followed.
"What's up?" Lewis asked when they got to the kitchen. Angel turned to him.
"Nothing. I just wanted a moment alone to put my arms around you," she said,
encircling him. Lewis closed his arms around her and kissed the top of her head.
Everyone was still watching the game. When several minutes passed, Oswald
became impatient.
"I'm starving! What's taking them so long?" He got up and headed toward the
kitchen.
"Maybe they're having trouble finding the paper plates," Drew said as he got up
and followed Oswald.
Seconds later, Kate turned to find Drew and Oswald standing in the entrance to
the kitchen, staring in. She nudged Briana and gestured toward them. The two of
them stood up and went over. They peeked inside the kitchen and saw Angel and
Lewis with their arms still around eachother, eyes closed and dancing to that song
no one else could hear but them. Briana put her hand on Drew's shoulder and gestured
for him to come back to the couch with her. Kate did the same with Oswald.
"But I'm hungry," Oswald whispered. "They can't keep it up forever!"
"Let's give the newly engaged couple a few more minutes," Kate said. As everyone
walked back to the couch, Kate took one more glance back at the kitchen and smiled
at the couple. "Congrats, Lewis," she said quietly. Lewis' eyes opened and he looked
at Kate. He smiled at her when he saw the sincere happiness for him on her face.
Kate turned and went back to the couch and left Lewis and Angel to their "dance".

"The priests have said my soul's salvation
Lies in the balance of the angels
And underneath the wheels of passion
I keep the faith in my fashion

When we dance
Angels will run and hide their wings"

Stay tuned for Part 9...
