This question is a little bit tricky. I learned it from my philosophy class. Question:
It took 20 days for all the leaves to fall from a
tree. If the number of leaves that fell each
day was twice that of the previous day, on which day
was the tree half bare? |

Geometric series: Sn = a(1-r^n)/(1-r) now a = 1, r = 2. n = 20 for all the leaves to fall. S20 = (1) (1 - 2^20) / (1 - 2) = 1048575 Let n = i for half of the leaves to fall. Si = (1) (1 - 2^i) (1 - 2) = 1048575 / 2 i = log (2) [ (1048575 / 2) - 1] i = 18.99999 = 19 round to the nearest day Therefor it takes 19 days for half of the leaves to fall. |
