English medium education - benefits and drawbacks

It is good that students learn English and can communicate with the outside world.
Most of the reference books are available in English language and not in Nepali. So a student having a sound knowledge of the English language can gain benefit from those books.
Again, in higher studies, the medium of teaching is English.
One thing I don’t like is that the students who have studied in English medium school from their childhood are generally weak in Nepali.
In some schools the teachers don’t have good English. The students are given wrong pronunciation and taught wrong meanings of phrases and idioms. This is one of the reasons why some students can’t secure high marks in external exams. - Amrit

Unhappy science students

There are more than 60% of Science students who do not really intend to join Science courses, but because of the pressure from their parents they are bound to do so. They can’t give their full attention to a subject in which they are interested. Because of this, they fail the exam. The wrong thing is not that the student failed the exam. The wrong thing is that the boy was forced to study Science. Certainly, parents want the best for us and are much more experienced than us, but they can’t change our interest. They can only suggest but not decide for us. - Pradip
Parents should stop teaching their sons and daughters to say “ My aim is to be a doctor or engineer.” Instead they have to teach them to take their own decisions. Society should understand that doctors and engineers are not the only citizens who could fulfil the country’s demands. There are many other fields in which there is a lot to be done. - Anita
After SLC, students take up the words from their parents, relatives and neighbours who are ignorant of their calibre. They feel the glory of being a successful doctor or engineer. That sense of glory then takes them to the private science colleges.

SLC examination, 2000

Let's refer back to Kantipur, National Nepali daily published on Saturday, July 1, 2000. On the first page under the headline, "P;Pn;Lsf] k/LIffkmn k|sflzt" we got to see the photograph of year 2000 SLC board topper, Miss Sumnima Singh. Below her photragraph we also got the names of the toppers among boys. Now if the SLC board had decided to publish the names of topper among boys and topper among girls then why did the Kantipur publish the photograph of the female topper only. Maybe because she was the OVERALL board topper as well. Well, that's fair enough. Now let's refer to The Rising Nepal of July 2, 2000. Under the headline, "SLC toppers enjoying competitive careers", we got to see two photographs, one each of Miss Sumnima Singh (Siddhartha Vanasthali, KTM) and Master Jeevan Poudel (Siddhartha Vanasthali, KTM) but the photograph of the other male topper Master Manoj Bohara (New Horizon English Boarding School, Butwal) was missing (even on page 7). Manoj had secured marks which equalled the marks secured by Jeevan, but why was his photograph deprived of a coveted place in the national daily? We can draw our own conclusions and the most obvious one is that because he was not from the valley. I am not trying to take anything away from the students of the valley, but the national daily did seem to be a bit biased- Sajal
