Christmas as we knew it is coming to an end
The world is soon forgetting man's greatest ever friend
He burst into our darkness two thousand years ago
And every year that passes sees his memory dimmer glow

It stems from our false premise that Christmas grows on trees
That Christ our stricken Saviour can be taken at our ease
It grows from our defencelessness against our boastful pride
To celebrate a Christmas and forget why Jesus died

Let's decorate the halls and illuminate the mind
We'll say goodwill is given not to but by mankind
Our all-sufficient gaiety will safely see us through
Another merry Christmas that we won't admit we rue

But take real hope, you cynics and sufferers of soul
The Christ who started Christmas came to fulfil His goal
To place that love inside us where it by His grace will stay
As we quietly place our confidence in Him on Christmas Day
