BUFFLECARS 3

1978 Datsun 510. This is the car which proved its worth on the Wabasca Road. Mine was a four door sedan but the colour is almost right on, cost $5000 new, dropped $500 when my wife kept the salesman standing in the rain while she sat in the car, very shrewd technique. As with all Datsuns the engine and running gear are gold, the body is crap, although with the roads this one travelled it's amazing it survived at all.

1982 Ford Econoline van. Long wheelbase, metallic grey plain jane. Bought new for $8900, down from $10,500 asked because it didn't have power steering, somebody special-ordered it that way, couldn't pay for it and the dealer had to move it. I put in side windows, carpet, and lined the interior. Great for camping but it took a lot of work on twisty mountain roads. Still running.

1986 Mazda 323 hatchback. Great little car, 300,000 km on the clock and still rolling. $8600 new. Only car I ever owned that went to San Francisco (via Vancouver, Seattle and Kurt Cobain country) with the kids one year. Waited 'til it was back in Edmonton two days before it blew the clutch. Motor job at 170,000 km, made it to the garage parking lot under its own power, just.

1993 Mazda Protege-really reliable.

1988 Olsdmobile Cutlass Cruiser. What can I say, it's a station wagon. First air conditioning I ever owned, the jury is still out on that.
Perished in a garage fire in Edmonton, July 1, 2000, along with a Chev. sedan, two vans, the garage, several large trees and almost a house. I had just put almost $800 in computer chips and exhaust system work into it. R.I.P.
