Abraham Ryck came to New Amsterdam and married. Greitje Hendricks. He resided in New Amsterdam until some time after 1662 when he settled on the Arme Bouwery in Astoria L.I. where he died in 1689. His son Abraham adopted the name Riker, but the other children went by the patronymic Abramse and the surname Van Lent supposed to have been the family name of their maternal grandfather Hendrick Hermanszen.

FAMILY TRADITION:
ABRAHAM RYCKEN's ship left Amsterdam, Holland in May of 1640 and arrived in New Amsterdam in August of 1640. He came with his wife, Grietje Harmanse and baby son, Ryck Rycken.
Abraham Rycken was alloted land or ground brief, on Northwest Long Island, facing the East River and Long Island Sound.
Beginning in June of 1638 land patents were granted "in freehold" as against the previous policy of land grants held only for cultivation.
Since Abraham's land was granted to him prior to his arrival, it seem likely that it was negotiated by his father-in-law Hendrick Harmansen, who owned land near Abraham's bouwery [farm], which he is believed to have acquired in 1638 while living in Manhattan.
In 1664 Abraham acquired Hewlitt's Island in the East River, opposite his farm. The island later became known as Riker's Island and remained in possession of Abraham and his descendants for almost 200 years when it was purchased by New York City.
Abraham and Grietje issued nine children.
SURNAMES:
Only two of five sons, Ryck and Hendrick assumed their father's family name, van Lent, our research covers mostly the descendants of these two children.
The families of two other sons, Jan and Abraham became known under the surname of RIKER, which evolved out their father's patronymic, Rycken. Jacob, however used his patronymic Abrahamse and signed his will as Jacob ABRAMS.
RYCK ABRAMSE [van LENT] m/ Catrina Syboutsen [Kranckheit] d/o Harck and Wyntje Teunis. They lived for many years in Newtown. Later moved to Yonkers area and finally up the North [Hudson] River to the land of Ryck's Patent. This land being acquired by Ryck and Jacob Abramse and several close relatives in 1685.
HENDRICK ABRAMSE [van LENT] m/ Catrina van Texel. Their first born was baptized in June of 1681. They issued 10 children.
When Ryck and Hendrick settled in Ryck's Patent land, adjacent to the Manor of Cortlandt, at the end of the century, they became members of the newly established Dutch Reformed Church of Sleepy Hollow. Ryck served as an elder from 1698 - 1713 and Hendrick later became a Deacon.
