Smithfield Cemetery History

From Fred Francey: (annotations by -gw)

Historical Information on the Wabamun Cemetery Co. Ltd. (later the Duffield Cemetery, and later the Smithfield Cemetery) was located at Parkland County December 2001 and some corrections to names and sites have now been included.
A minute book outlining the formation of the Wabamun Cemetery Company Ltd begins with records of a meeting held in the Wabamun School, dated April 20, 1907 at 3 PM, whereby those present agreed to establish the Cemetery Company. Attending this meeting were:1 Rev. T. A. Brown, 2Rev. W. Liversedge, 3D. H. Lent, J. P. 4Lester Hadley, 5John Woods, 6W. K. Shields, 7Rufus Hadley, 8Mrs. S(toker). White Sr., 9Wesley Thompson, 10F.J. Francey, 11T. E. Lord, and 12Wm. Best.
D. H. Lent was selected Chairman for the meeting. First Directors elected: F. J. Francey, T. E. Lord, and Mrs. S. White Sr. Of these, F. J. Francey was elected President. Capital stock of the company was $500, this divided in 100 shares each with a value of $5.00. At the meeting of August 17, 1911, it was suggested that the NW corner of the cemetery be kept for those of the Roman Catholic faith, as they might want to consecrate one part with their own rights and ceremonies. It was also suggested that the SW portion near the gate and along the road allowance, be kept for those who cannot afford to buy a grave.
Signed by D.H. Lent, Chairman.
On June 27, 1924 the Directors of the Wabamun Cemetery Company Ltd. Agreed to transfer ownership at no charge to the M.D. of Inga # 520, later the M.D. of Stony Plain.
