Christopher Stebbings was born in Mildenhall, Suffolk, England in 1899. He served in the British Army during World War I. In 1921, Christopher arrived in Carvel where his brother Gilbert was farming.
Chris Stebbings married Mary Belcourt in 1927. They lived and were farming in the Carvel District for about ten years. Then they moved to a farm south of Manly School where they remained for about three years. While residing there and cultivating the land formerly owned by Sabadaska they had intentions of buying it but decided against this because of too many rocks.
During these years seven children were born to them: Roger, Barbara, Pamela, Fred, Allan, Franklin and Gordon.
In about 1942 they purchased Gilbert O'Sullivan's farm which joined the north west corner of Bad Lake, (SW23-52-3-W5). After moving to the Duffield District, Winston, Patricia and Blain were born. Freddy died at this time from the effects of diabetes.
Chris Stebbings and his sons cleared and broke land on these farms and cut and hauled logs for themselves and other people. The brothers rented and cultivated other farm lnd in the district and raised cattle and hogs for a livelihood. In spite of all this it was difficult to support a large family during the Depression, nevertheless they managed.
The children attended school in all three districts. Their last farm was over four miles from Duffield and the school. With no properly maintained road the last mile of travel was impossible at times.
Chris Stebbings spent some time in the new Veteran's Hospital in Edmonton before he passed away in 1970.
