Building the New Schoolhouse - 1

September 4th, 1920
The Deputy Minister
Department of Education - Edmonton
Sir
re our Boards actions Sept 1st
I beg to enclose copy of further resolutions unanimously passed
This will prove to you that our Board is fully alive as to the urgency of educating our children and is determined to do its level best to carry out its responsible duties.
As to the erection of a School Building during the coming fall and winter they, with the help of the few resident taxpayers, intend doing as much of the work themselves as possible, free of charge, to save expense as our S.D. is so terribly poor. Few settlers.
This will be a great relief to the few non-resident taxpayers including the Western Canada Land Co.
Living in another District, as I do, their action appears to me to be fine and unselfish. I do hope, Sir, that the Department, realizing our trouble, will treat us generously.
Yours respectfully

Capt. L.H. Hurst - Calgary
Sir
I received your letter of the 8th inst and thank you. I, at once, forwarded the contents to our Chairman. Saw him yesterday. He wishes me to say that he has laid the matter before the Board, and other Taxpayers.
Although the Board considers you are asking a high price for that size and class of Building, if it is found to be possible, when the snow arrives, to lift the building and remove it bodily, and if the Department of Education authorizes the purchase, then our Board will be prepared to pay Two hundred dollars ($200.00) to you for the Building and its belongings.
You will know that our District is terribly poor and short of settlers.
Yours respectfully

Capt. L.H.Hurst - Calgary
Sir
I wrote to you Sept 24th but have received no reply. Will you kindly let me know, as early as possible, whether you are inclined to accept the offer of our Board on the two specified conditions?
If you and our Trustees do not come to terms as to your Building, the resident Taxpayers will be compelled, when harvest is over, to get out some logs and erect a building themselves; which they intend doing without charge in order to help our poor district and especially the non-resident Taxpayers.
Yours respectfully

The Registrar
Land Titles Office - Edmonton
Sir
I represent the above S.D. We are likely to buy a building for a School, to be removed; situated on SW24-53-4-5, nominally belonging to L.H. Hurst. I beg to enclose 25 cents. Will you kindly let me know, at once, if Mr. Hurst holds a clear title, or whether this Farm is mortgaged?
If mortgaged, who is the mortgagee, with his address? You will understand why I want to know.
Yours respectfully
