Day By Day:
The next five pages of letters represent the day to day operation of the Secretary. They may be of interest to dedicated historians or students writing papers for Education Courses as a database, but be warned, they're not very exciting.

Deputy Minister of Education

Sir
I beg to acknowledge your letter AT 37743-16 Re taxation. The Board of Trustees at their last meeting decided on a tax rate of 6 1/4 cts. per acre but at that time thought the School would be in operation this year. A Mr. Houghton with a family of nine children, seven of school age, told the Board he would stay here, but since then moved to Edmonton, the tax notices were posted before the Trustees knew that the family was about to move to Edmonton.
It was the Board's desire to tax 6 1/4 cts. per acre this year so that any outstanding obligations might be paid when due. we will have sufficient funds to meet these three debenture coupons you speak of when due. No less than 8 tax notices have been returned to me so far of taxpayers having left the district, it is therefore necessary at present to keep up a small taxation. Your Obedient Servant John Haigh

Dear Sir
Thank you for your courteous and gentlemanly letter of May 11th. I enclose your Tax Notices. You will understand that I (as an official) am bound to send it to you in that form, until the Official Auditor is satisfied, and requests me to cross off the Roll the 2 items of $11.55 each; as he instructed me to get the back receipts, for inspection. I can make the Tax Receipt clear.
I have written to Messrs. Pringle and Whittaker, Solicitors. Their answer will probably satisfy the Auditor. I hope so.
For 1917, you owe $6.70. -
For 1918, you owe $6.40. -
If I receive, from you, these Taxes before June 30th, 1918, you are entitled to deduct 60 cents from the current Taxes, making $12.50, altogether, for 1917 and 1918.
Yours respectfully
Thomas Street

Sirs
May I ask you to be good enough to give me proof that the School Taxes, of Sylvan S.D. were paid by Mrs. Pegrum and Mr. George _________, for 1916, on NW34-53-4-5 NE34-53-4-5.
The Assessment Roll does not show it nor the Receipt Book. Someone has blundered. - You, as Solicitors, will understand my request.
I have heard from Mr. J.W. Stobart.
Yours respectfully
Thomas Street
