What's the most fascinating thing that Japanese scientists are doing at the moment? It seems to be that they've actually found a use for a cockroach! As an aside, did you know that the cockroach is the only animal on the planet which is inedible? They're just too disease ridden to be of any safe nutritional value!
These scientists in Japan, however, have decided to take their revenge by grabbing a poor little roach and removing its wings and antennae. They then fit it with a little backpack which has a couple of electrodes where it's attenae used to be and a small camera. This package is about twice the weight of the roach, but doesn't seem to hinder its movement, although they are working on making it lighter.
Once the pre-packaged roach has been obtained, electric signals can be sent by remote control to make the roach go where these mad scientists want it to.
As the title says, Yeurch! There is a use to this contraption, however, and it isn't just mindless sadism. The "inventors" (if they can thus be called) are considering such varied uses as searching for victims trapped under rubble (after earthquakes, and so forth) and undercover surveillance - giving new meaning to the word "bug."
