June 18th Meeting Results |
|
It was a long meeting as Saanich Council listened for 3 hours to local
resident concerns about the development of the Kenmore & Tyndall
property. Council then went on to debate among themselves for nearly an
hour more.
In the end, Saanich Council recognized the wishes of the local residents of the
development and voted to retain the RS-6 zoning (Single Family Residential) for
the property and to NOT make changes to the Gordon Head Local Area Plan that
would allow a Commercial and High Density Residential development on the
property.
The real winners are the local residents of Kenmore & Tyndall. It
should restore ones faith in the democratic process and the ability of local
residents to have real impact over local policies and their local neighbourhood
developments. Council members, in most cases, kept everyone guessing
on how they would vote right up until their last few statements in the
debate. Even then it was not until the voting was completed did the
outcome become clear. The exhaustion of everyone in the room was apparent
when it was all over and people drifted home.
