OUTFOXED: Puddy Takes a Powder

Gideon looked around the room for Samantha. He'd heard her tell
Mitch a few moments ago that she'd have to go soon, and he wanted to thank
her for her help with Janine. He walked out into the hall and there she
was, sitting on the stairs and typing furiously into her laptop computer.
He waited until she was finished, noting the unusually worried expression
on her face. She turned off the machine and looked up at him, replacing
her expression with her usual smile. It was like watching a wall going up.
He sat down beside her.

        "What's wrong?", he asked gently.

Samantha closed her eyes and let some of her former concern show on
her face.

"Oh Gideon, I WANT to help her, but I don't know how! I'm not used
to feeling this helpless!"

        "Who?"

Samantha sighed. "You don't know her, she's not one of the
Kindred..not in the strictest sense anyway. It's...kind of confusing. A
very good friend of mine is having a LOT of trouble...where's Evan?"

Gideon shook his head, confused at the abrupt change of subject.
"Excuse me?"

Samantha smiled faintly and rolled her eyes. "Don't mind me, my
natural powers of lack-of-concentration seem to be heightened by this
entire thing. I'm not going TOTALLY off-topic, I was just thinking that
maybe Evan can help me...but you guys are in the middle of planning for the
Yule party, aren't you?"

"I'm sure Evan wouldn't mind helping you, dear. He seems
quite..impressed by you." This brought the ghost of a smile to her lips
and she gave him her Oh-YOU! look. Gideon rose and went to find Evan. He
was concerned. He's only seen Samantha this worried once before, again
because of helplessness, and THAT was not a situation he'd hoped would ever
repeat. He spoke a few words into Evan's ear and followed him out to the
staircase. As he turned to go back in, he heard Samantha say, "Evan, I'm sorry
to bother you, and this seems like a strange question, I know, but I need to
know what kind of illnesses or diseases can affect your race...and I need to
know NOW!"
...........................

It was getting on towards midnight, and Samantha was saying her
goodbyes to the residents of Oakwoods.

"Don't look so downhearted, Mitchy," she said, her usual
mischievious self returned, as she walked arm in arm with the young
werewolf out the front door. "The Yule party's not TOO far away, and then
you'll get to charm a whole HOST of lady Kindred!"

"I can hardly WAIT to see THAT!", Evan said dryly, "Maybe we should
take out a Blue Cross policy on him NOW?" Mitch gave him a dirty look and
with a wink at Samantha, disappeared inside to talk to Arioch, to whom
Samantha had already said her farewells. She turned and gave Joshua a kiss on
the cheek and promised to wheedle the cake recipe out of him, then she
turned to Gideon.

        "Once again, we say goodbye!"

Gideon smiled "My dear little cousin, you'd better not let
another forty-seven years pass before you visit my home again!"

"I AM coming back for the Yule party!", she promised, giving him a
hug and watching he and Joshua go inside. As they went she heard Joshua
say faintly to Gideon, "Cousin?", to which Gideon replied, "LONG story!"

She turned finally to Evan. "I'm sorry I wasn't much help,
Samantha," Evan said ruefully, "I haven't heard about ANYTHING like that
before!"

"That's Ok. You never know, the other information you gave me
COULD turn out to help. I'll let you know how we're doing. I WISH I had
thought to bring a picture of her to find out whether or not you know her!"
Samantha shook her head in exasperation, "I sometimes wonder if I'M not the
one with amnesia! I'll see you at the Yule party?"

"Yes, definitely. Several of my people are going to be there.
I'll be talking to them before that, and I'll ask them about her."

"Thanks a LOT, from both of us." Samantha said sincerely. She
turned away for a moment and with a small remote in her hand, activated
her familiar blue doorway. "It's taking a little longer to warm up this
time, " she said, tapping her foot impatiently. "I've already checked out
of the hotel in town and THIS gate goes directly home...THERE it is." She
turned back to Evan, "See you next month. If you find out anything, Gideon
knows how to contact me..or you can drop me a note on the VAMPYRES list!"
With that, she turned a disappeared through the blue doorway, which itself
disappeared a moment later.

Well, Kindred, this is the end of Samantha's OUTFOXED fluff, but, as you
can tell, the beginning of another adventure. Stay tuned!

The evening was at an end, and Jessica was sorry, but dawn was
coming. She stood at the door of her apartment saying goodbye to
Gideon's party and was gratified to see Mitch lingering behind the
rest. He stood there before her, hands in pockets, blue eyes downcast.

"Well...I guess I'll see you at the Yule party," he said.

"Actually, a little before. We have to put up all those Christmas
trees and hang all that mistletoe," she replied.

     "Right. Well, see you then."

*Men* thought Jessica. She stood on tiptoe, and pressed her lips
against his. She pulled back to see him staring at her, wide-eyed
with astonishment. Behind him, Evan hooted, and Mitch quickly frowned.

"See you then, wolf of my heart," said Jessica as she closed the
door.

"Well," said Cecily. "That was worth the whole trip out here. I
really must be going as well. Thank you for a lovely evening, dearest
Jessica. I'll see you soon." She materialized enough to give Jessica
and Elizabeth a quick kiss, and vanished.

"Thank you for a nice party," said Tremayne. "I really enjoyed
myself, though I really wasn't sure how an evening with the kindred
would turn out. Take care."

"Have a nice flight home," said Jessica, hugging him. "Thanks for
coming."

As she shut the door behind Tremayne, she let out a sigh of
relief. Her first party, though small, had gone well. Everyone came,
they had laughed together a lot, and she felt closer to them than ever.

"Great party, Jessi," said Elizabeth, stretching. "I'm ready to
fall asleep on my feet."

"Let me give the cats some kibbles, and we'll call it a night,"
replied Jessica. As the cat food rattled into the bowl, Merlin
appeared from where he had been hiding under the bed all night.

"Well, you missed it, you goofy feline," Jessica said, and they
all went to bed.

Jessica had just closed her eyes, when she felt a cat jump onto
the bed.

"Hi, Merlin, come to apologize?" she murmured, not opening her
eyes.

*Not exactly* answered a familiar voice.

Jessica sat bolt upright to see Sammie sitting in her lap and
grinning. *Sorry. I fell asleep with the kittens. They ARE pretty
cute, you know. Did I miss anything? What did Gideon decide to do
about the host gifts everyone always brings?*

"Oh, uh, he is going to request that everybody donate to AIDS
research and care. How are you going to get home?"

*My teleportation thing works pretty good when I'm headed toward
home. It's only heading someplace unfamiliar that gives me problems.
Thanks for a fun evening. Great chocolate!* With a flick of her tail,
she disappeared.

"What a lifestyle!" Jessica murmured to herself as she fell back
on the bed. When she felt another cat thump up there, she pretended to
be asleep.
