Helheim, the cold, dark and misty home of the dead is located in the world of Niflheim, on the lowest level of the Nordic cosmos. Helheim homes Elvidnir (Eljudnir?), the Hall of Hel. None can ever escape Helheim, Gjoll, the impassable river which flows from Hvergelmir encircles Helheim and can contain even the gods. All those who die bravely in battle reach Valhalla, where all others; those who die from illness, old age, and the wicked reside in Helheim.
Niflheim lies underneath the third root of Yggdrasil. On the same level lies Nastrond where hte serpent Nidhogg feeds on the corpses of the dead and gnaws on the roots of Yggdrasil.
Proceeding Ragnarok, a hall will be established here dedicated to the punishment of those who murder, those who break oaths, and philanderers.
