NIXON - MILLAR - MOSS
To Willis INC To North Stars
RF Trot Nixon
OF Kevin Millar
SP Damian Moss
The skinny for Willis INC:
Looking to shake things up a little more after the blockbuster involving Guerrero and Sweeney, GM Willis ships off one former Spitball Artist for another, and for a young pitcher enjoying a great start to the year. Kevin Millar has moved his way into the Red Sox everyday starting lineup and hit like gangbusters. Damian Moss has quietly gone 5-0 with a 2.11 ERA.
The skinny for the Foul Balls:
Trot Nixon has been a consistent performer who can do a little of everything... drive in runs, hit for power and steal the odd base. This year, he's part of a hot offense, and he's flourishing to the tune of a .330 batting average.
And the winner is...
As sort of a leveling out process from the previous two trades, GM Willis gets a win and GM Seskitim gets a loss here. Trot Nixon has been great, and is likely to continue towards his best season, and looking at Damian Moss' K-BB ratio, you get the feeling he'll fall flat sooner rather than later, but the guy that tips the scales to Willis INC here is Kevin Millar. He's a great hitter who has been shadowed do to the unfair tag of bench player, even with his career OPS of .871.
GUERRERO - ABREU - SWEENEY - TEJADA - PIERRE
To Pontiac Pride To Willis INC
RF Vladimir Guerrero
OF Bobby Abreu
1B Mike Sweeney
SS Miguel Tejada
CF Juan Pierre
The skinny for Pontiac Pride:
The man is back. Pontiac Pride regains superstud Vladimir Guerrero as well as struggling power+speed threat Bobby Abreu, and dispenses with the ever struggling shortstop Miguel Tejada. Who says you can never go back home?
The skinny for Willis INC:
Just as Guerrero goes back home, GM Willis regains Mike Sweeney and wins the Tejada lottery. GM Willis will be banking on a return to form by the reigning AL MVP. Juan Pierre, a favorite of GM Willis', should provide the team with a lot of hits and swiped bags all year.
And the winner is...
We won't beat around the bush here. GM Bin Laden wins hands down. While a major turnaround by Tejada is not out of the question, and we're confident in our pre- season prediction of Sweeney having a fantastic year, this one is a big coup for Pontiac Pride, particularly since they didn't have to give up Albert Pujols to do it. Juan Pierre is mediocre at best, even with the steals. The really great thing for GM Bin Laden is that it's early in the season and the team isn't too far back to still make a run at the top.
BOONE - PAYTON
To North Stars To Foul Balls
3B Aaron Boone OF Jay Payton
The skinny for the North Stars
GM Seskitim lands a sizzling 3rd sacker to give him a healthy tandem at the hot corner with Eric Chavez. After a slow start, Aaron Boone has been showing that last year's numbers were not a fluke by any means, and he may very well surpass them this year in the new homer happy stadium in Cincinnati, already sporting 10 HRs and 7 stolen bases.
The skinny for the Foul Balls:
The first ever trade involving the expansion Foul Balls helps to relieve the questionable outfield situation they are currently dealing with. Darin Erstad is on the DL, and even when he is playing, is only good for a few singles here and there, and Reggie Sanders appears to be back to his normal form and won't likely have a regular spot on the roster much longer. Payton appears to finally be healthy and is thoroughly taking advantage of his playtime in the rarified air of Coors.
And the winner is...
We congratulate GM Serge on his foray into the Park-Ex league trade market, but the felicitations will end there. Aaron Boone may be the top fantasy 3rd baseman in the league at the moment, while Payton, although hitting well, is unlikely to continue all year. The Stars make out like bandits.
MATSUI - WELLS - CRUZ - GARCIA
To Raccoon City To North Stars
SP Freddy Garcia
OF Jose Cruz Jr
LF Hideki Matsui
SP David Wells
The skinny for Raccoon City:
The Raccoons go after a big name pitcher in Freddy Garcia. While their overall pitching staff was solid, they lacked depth and had a few question marks. GM KneeCo also picks up the man who figures to be batting in the coveted 5-hole of the San Francisco Giants lineup, behind some guy named Barry.
The skinny for the North Stars:
For GM Seskitim, it's all about the Yanks. David Wells is a solid guy to have, but the man GM Seskitim wanted in this deal was obviously the one known as Godzilla, and catch lightning in a bottle.
And the winner is...
The Raccoons took the shot to draft high profile Japanese import Hideki Matsui. Amidst big talks by many different baseball writers at the beginning of the season, and the promise of a spring training with only 1 strikeout, GM Seskitim decided it was worth risking a big time pitcher in Freddy Garcia to reap the benefits of what may be a huge year from a rising star. The performance of David Wells and Jose Cruz will go a long way in deciding this one. Although Garcia has been shaky, and David Wells has been masterful, we'll go with our initial hunch and score this one to GM KneeCo for landing a top flight starter, which is what everyone wants. Jose Cruz is not likely to perform worse than Matsui, if at all.
BYRD - URBINA
To Pontiac Pride To North Stars
SP Paul Byrd RP Ugheth Urbina
The skinny for Pontiac Pride:
GM Bin Laden needs starting pitching... badly. Right now, the team's pitching hopes are pinned on a lot of uncertainties. Roger Clemens, their staff ace, is 40 years old, in his final season and coming off a subpar year filled with nagging injuries. Odalis Perez is coming off a breakout year, but he's never done it before. Kevin Brown has a huge upside, but he's only pitched 178 innings combined in the last two seasons, and at 38, he's no young pup either. Brad Radke is coming off an injury shortened season as well, and was innefective when pitching, and he's on the wrong side of 30 as well.
The skinny for the North Stars:
With Danny Graves and Byung-Hyun Kim being converted to starters this year, and Trevor Hoffman perhaps out for the season, GM Seskitim found himself in the unique position of being a team without a closer. Ugheth Urbina should bring along 30+ saves and a very healthy strikeout-to-IP ratio as well.
And the winner is...
Hindsight is 20/20. We have the luxury of writing this anlysis a couple of weeks after the trade in question, so I can factor in the fact that Paul Byrd is on the DL. This is no surprise, considering the Royals overworked him to his limits last season, to the tune of 7 complete games. All sides equal we'd give it to the team getting the starter, but Byrd's likely to miss a fair bit of time, and also likely to see his performance drop somewhat from last season. GM Seskitim goes a nice way towards patching up a major hole in his roster, and GM Bin Laden's troubles on the mound remain a major concern. We'll score this one to the North Stars.
