The Story Of Our Galaxie 500

Our Galaxie has undergone only minor changes since we purchased
it on August 27, 1997. We pulled it out of the horse stable caked with
dust. We had known of this car's existence a year and a half before we
bought it, but family members were clamoring for it. They wanted it given
to them. We were initially told to forget we ever saw it. As it turns out,
my old pickup died and I needed a replacement. I knew the owner also had
a truck he could no longer drive. After much convincing to the family to
sell me the truck, they offered the Galaxie as well. We took `em both!
Fortunately for us, we were the only ones actually willing to pay for the
car. Although it wasn't a low mileage cream puff, the owner had faithfully
put it into storage every winter, so it was well preserved and all there.
That day when I drove it home, the fuel pump was spewing gas out of the
vent hole. Luckily, it was only hitting the oil filter. It was in need of
some normal maintenance items, as well as some cosmetic trim items. I like
to think I made an old man's last days a little brighter, by giving him
$6,000.00 cash and keeping his car in the same, if not better condition
than he did.

The overall condition is a real good number 3 car. The car sustained
some minor front collision damage, back when original repair parts and
finishes were readily available. The majority of the car is an un-restored
New England car. That's right, a New England car, not a jewel from down south!

The engine compartment remains original, except for the reproduction
belts, hoses, wires, hose clamps, and battery. We decided that since these
items all needed replacement, why not use parts that would look authentic.
There is no paint on the engine block, because it still runs perfect at over
106,000 miles, and has not been rebuilt. The Cruis-O-Matic transmission was
rebuilt in April 2001. Since the engine has not been pulled, the hood, frame
rails, suspension, wheel wells, and firewall still have their original finish.
Future plans include pulling the motor for a refresh and paint, detail the
engine compartment, new coil springs all around, and a new exhaust system.

We've done some updating of the car to make it more drivable. New
shock absorbers, radial tires, halogen headlights, Pertronix Electronic
ignition, complete brake overhaul, and a hidden FM converter have made a
world of difference. The car handles very well, has a smooth ride, and a very
quiet idle at stop signs.

The interior is original except for a couple of chrome plated reproduction
trim/accessory parts. Those parts replaced were enough to brighten the interior
and make it shine. A couple of pieces found a swap meets took care of the exterior.
Our goal is to keep this car as authentic looking and original as possible, and in
top mechanical condition so as not to have to be trailered. For helping us in our
efforts we would like to thank the following:
