Minor Football 28th
February vs Croom in Croom
Galbally Minor Football Team began their south league
campaign with a defeat in desperate conditions on Sunday
week last. This is an amalgamation side with
Garryspillane and their opponents were Croom, the premier
county champions of last year and the score was 1-6 to 0-1
at half time. Despite excellent displays from Robert
Healy, John Sheehan, Bill Hayes, William Harty, Martin
O'Halloran and Declan Dineen the final score was 2-8 to 1-1
in Crooms favour. Croom had a number of last years team
available and their experience showed on the day. However
this was a young Galbally team and they will have better
days ahead. The team that lined out was, Robert Healy;
John Creed, John Sheehan, Padraig Wallace; John Hayes,
Seamus Bourke, TJ Begley; Maurice O'Brien, Declan Dineen;
Bill Hayes, William Harty, Martin O'Halloran; Tim
O'Meara, Niall Henebry and Seamus O'Reilly. It was
encouraging to see so many Garryspillane players in
attendance and already it looks as though the
amalgamation will be a successful one.
Minor Football 17th April vs Knockainey in
Galbally
The Minor football team played the second game of their
league campaign and had a convincing win over a
knockainey team that included two limerick minors.
Playing some superb football the team scored 3-4 and were
generally on top for the whole game. The amalgamation
with garryspillane at this level is clearly working and
this was also evident on the previous Friday night when
the garryspillane minor hurlers beat coshlea gaels
convincingly. Best for Galbally on the night were John
Sheehan & Declan Dineen who are both starring on the
senior team at the moment, The superb William Harty who
scored two goals, Owen Bourke and Bill Hayes.
The Team was, Robert Healy, TJ Begley, Colin Watters, Pat
Keane, James Noonan, John Sheehan, Padraig Wallace,
Declan Dineen, Michael O Donnell, William Harty(2-0),
Andrew Healy(0-1), Owen Bourke(0-1), Johnny Hayes(1-0),
Billy Hayes(0-2), Vincent Sheehan. Subs. Damien Ryan for
Andrew Healy.

Pat Keane, TJ Begley, John Sheehan, Gary Henebry, Declan
Dineen, Richard Bourke, Karole Drea, Eddie Scully, Eoin

Minor County
Final
The Galbally Minor Football team was awarded the County
Championship on Friday night last in controversial
circumstances. Having played magnificently throughout the
year, they qualified for the final beating South
Liberties in the semi-final. The final was fixed for last
Friday night in Pallasgreen at 7pm. A large crowd
attended in anticipation of a memorable final.
Regrettably the Ahane team never showed up and Galbally
were awarded the title. The referee, under the
instruction of a delegate from the central council who
had attended the game, began the game with one team,
waited for Galbally to score and then awarded them the
title. Many thanks to John Keane an Ahane man for
presenting the cup in difficult circumstances and who
apologised profusely for the inconvenience caused. Keane
has been a great ambassador for Limerick football over
the years and was visibly upset over the situation.
Various rumours circulated around the venue as to why the
team didnt show up and it seems a though a player
was involved in the County Senior Hurling Semi Final two
days later. It also seems Ahane had a requested
postponement rejected by the county board. Most Galbally
people will remember Eddie Scully and Jeremy Staunton
play a county minor semi final in 1997 against Cappagh 18
hours before they played Oola in the County Senior Semi
Final. Enough Said. Congratulations to the side on giving
us such enjoyment for the year and a special thanks to
the garryspillane players for showing such dedication and
commitment to the side. It would not have been possible
to field a minor team without you. For the record the
team that lined out was exactly the same as that which
started the semi-final. Robert Healy, Padraig Wallace,
John Sheehan, TJ Begley, Colin Watters, Seamus Bourke,
James Noonan, Micheal ODonnell, Declan Dineen, Eoin
Bourke, William Harty, Andrew Healy, Maurice OBrien,
Billy Hayes, Stephen Bourke. Amazingly it took the team
three attempts to score, the score being a superb point
by inspirational captain Declan Dineen. He then accepted
the cup on behalf of the team.
Minor Hurling vs
Knockainey in Galbally 7th March 1999
Their hurling counterparts playing as Garryspillane drew
with Knockainey on Sunday last in an entertaining game of
hurling at Galbally. The team included some nice hurlers
who will no doubt lead the team to greater things later
in the year. The final score in the game was 1-6 to 1-6
and because the game had to produce a winner, both teams
decided to toss to decide a winner. Garryspillane won the
toss and will now progress with confidence to the next
game.
The team was, Alan Noonan, Padraig Wallace, Anton
Perkins, James Noonan, John Hayes, Seamus Bourke, Colin
Watters, John Cleary, Maurice O'Brien (0-3), TJ Begley,
William Harty (0-1), Owen Bourke, Dion O'Brien (1-2),
Bill Hayes, John Creed.
Sub. Martin O'Halloran for Creed.

Kilmallock on St Patricks Day and have beaten Coshlea
Gaels in early April.

South Junior Hurling League vs Bruff in Galbally
The Galbally Junior Hurling Team minus the Galtee Gaels
contingent put up a brave fight in desperate conditions

the lead but bruff took over after that and lead
convincingly at the interval. Galbally scored four points
in the second half but it wasnt enough. The final
score was Bruff 2-11 Galbally 0-4. Best for Galbally were

and the Goalscorer Henry Martin.

vs Kilmallock in Kilmallock
The Galbally junior hurling team lost their second game
to Kilmallock in Kilmallock on Saturday night last.Again
similar to the junior football team Galbally were missing
a number of regulars due to exams and Kilmallock also had
a number of players with vast senior experience including
some who played in an All Ireland Club Final. Galballys
situation was not helped by an injury to regular full
forward PJ O'Sullivan. The Final score was Galbally 0-3
Kilmallock 3-7. Best for Galbally were John Hyland, Joe
Kearney, Fergal Finnan and Kieran Begley.
The Team was: Mike Sheehan, John Hyland, Marcus Browne,

other kicked efforts at goal saved.
The team was Mike Sheehan, John Hyland, Mike Kearney,

South Junior Football League vs Hospital/Herbertstown in
Galbally
The Galbally junior football team lost their opening game
to Hospital/Herbertstown in Galbally on thursday night

opposition had a number of players with vast senior
experience. The final score was Galbally 1-12 Hospital
Herbertstown 0-16. Galbally play Galtee Gaels in the next
round on Friday next 14th May. Best for Galbally were

10th June 1999 South Junior Football
League vs Galtee Gaels in Galbally
The Galbally Junior football team drew with Galtee Gaels
in an entertaining game on Thursday night last. With both
sides fielding a number of players who had played at
either intermediate or senior level, the standard of
football was extremely high and both teams were
disciplined in their approach to the game. Galbally went
behind early on but then took the lead through a Denis
Ryan goal and held the lead for most of the game. However
Galtee Gaels regained the lead with time running out and
it took a brilliant long-range point from sharpshooter
Denis Ryan to equalise. Best for Galbally on the night
were Pat Gooley, Willie Donoghue, Liam Morrissey, and
Denis Ryan.
The team was: Dessie Hayes, John Hanrahan, Tom Quinlan,
Miah ODonnell, CJ Fahey, Pat Gooley, Willie ODonoghue,
Philip Sullivan, Joe Bourke, Henry Martin, Liam Morrissey
(0-2), Johnny Morrissey (0-4), Timmy Taylor (0-1), Willie
Casey, Denis Ryan (1-1).
Sub Michael Davern for Miah ODonnell.
The team that lined out on this night was possibly the
strongest to play in a junior game this year. Indeed this
team may have been strong enough to win the south
championship. Sadly however the draw wasnt enough and the
team failed to make the league semi finals. The team
subsequently broke up with players ineligible and injured
for the championship. In the end they were beaten in the
south semi final.
Championship vs
Stakers 1999
The Galbally Junior football
team had a comprehensive victory over stakers on Sunday
last in knocklong. The star of the show was undoubtedly
Johnny Morrissey one of the forgotten sons of Galbally
Football. Morrissey scored 1-10 from play and generally
created havoc in the stakers defence. Others to play well
for Galbally were Desmond Hayes who showed extreme
agility to deny stakers a late late goal from the penalty
spot. John Dunne, Inspirational Captain Philip Sullivan
and Timmy Taylor also played well. The Team was Desmond
Hayes, Mike Davern, John Dunne, Marcus Browne, Pat
Gooley, Tom Quinlan, Willie Donoghue, Philip Sullivan (0-1),
John Hanrahan, Karole Drea (1-3), Quin Perry (1-0), Liam
Cunningham, Damien Drea, Timmy Taylor (1-2), Johnny
Morrissey(1-10). Subs Paddy OBrien(1-0) for Karole
Drea, Miah ODonnell for Dunne, Jamie Hedigan for
Sullivan.
Senior Football
Championship Round 1 1999 vs Claughaun in Caherconlish 4th
June 1999
Galbally 0-07 Claughaun 3-03
The old story of a game of two halves was resurrected
last Friday night as a depleted galbally team took on old
rivals Claughaun in the first round of the championship.
Galbally defied their critics by leading by 0-04 to 0-00
at half time. Claughaun looked to be dead and buried, but
aided by a strong breeze Claughaun lead by two points,
two minutes into the second half after two early goals.
Galbally never recovered after that and a late goal
sealed the game for Claughaun. The next game is against
glin on the weekend of the 4th of July.
The team was John Scully, Gary Henebry, Ger Fahy, John
Kiely, Declan Wallace, Mike McGrath, Kieran Begley,
Martin Dineen, Pat Ryan, Pat Byrnes, Fergal Finnan,
Seamus Morrissey(0-2), Declan Dineen, Eddie Scully(0-1),
Johnny Cummins(0-4).
Galbally 1 14 Glin 1 9
GALBALLY bounced back into the race for the Limerick
senior football championship title when scoring a
delightful four point win over Glin at the Gaelic Grounds.
Glin led on two occasions in the opening half but it was
Galbally who held the advantage at the break 0 8 to 1 4.
The Glin goal came in the 20th minute from the boot of
John Horan. John Cummins, the veteran Galbally corner
forward, was in kicking mood, firing over no less than
nine points of his sides total. Eddie Scully put Galbally
in a strong position with 12 minutes left when he found
an opening in the Glin defence hit a good goal. Glin
fought feverishly in the last ten minutes and could have
been much closer to Galbally were it not for a super save
by John Scully.

Galbally 2 7 St. Kierans 1 7 SECOND HALF goals from
substitute, Denis Ryan and Deckie Dineen threw a lifeline
to Galbally in this seasons Limerick senior football
championship. The South Limerick club needed to topple
the hitherto unbeaten St. Kierans at Balleyagran and duly
obliged with an excellent team performance, though St.
Kierans will bemoan a series of missed chances in the
first half when full forward Seamus Oâ™Donnell
was very much off kicking form. In a tightly contested
first half, in which they played with a stiffish breeze,
Kierans had the better chances and an early goal from O
Donnell appeared to set them up but a tigerish Galbally
kept ticking over and a string of points from Eddie
Scully and John Cummins had them level 0 5 to 1 2 at the
interval. Michael Greaney had St. Kierans ahead within
ten seconds of the second half and O'Donnell then made a
two points difference. But then Dick Dineen, with a 41st
minute goal, put Galbally in front and they never looked
back afterwards.

The following report
was taken from the Limerick Leader and reports on the
Drawn game between Galbally and Fr. Caseys in the 1998
County Senior Football championship
Galbally 1-11 Fr Casey's 0-14
WHATEVER the outcome of this season's Limerick senior
county football championship, Galbally can stand up
proudly and say that they gave it their best shot.
Looking out of it going into the final quarter of this
exciting clash with a fancied Fr Casey's side at
Kilmallock on Sunday last, they showed exceptional
courage and spirit, snatching a draw in the dying minutes
and going agonisingly close to scoring a last second
point that would have given them a sensational victory.
While Fr Casey's played by far the most attractive
football during the hour, there was a lack of bite about
their play that eventually cost them victory. They
withstood an early Galbally surge to lead comfortably by
0-10 to 1-3 at the break and three minutes into the
second period they maintained that advantage. Galbally
manager Johnny Wallace, however, is a tough taskmaster.
He instills a sense of pride in his charges that is
impossible to ignore and soon the black and whites were
playing with new-found spirit. The impressive Eddie
Scully popped over a brace of frees, Ger Fahy added a
lovely point from play and even though a point from Tom
Fitzgerald appeared to rescued the win for Fr Casey's,
Mike McGrath, who had moved from centre back to the
forward line, drove over the bar for Galbally to leave
just a point between the sides with four minutes
remaining. It was exciting stuff and for the only time in
the game, Galbally were on top. Their equalising point,
however, had a real touch of class about it. They won a
free 30 metres out on the left sideline and with time
running out the kick was entrusted to the youthful county
minor star, Eddie Scully. Eddie's kick was straight and
true. It pierced the centre of the posts and instead of
bemoaning a defeat that would have put an end to their
championship aspirations, determined Galbally were given
a lifeline. At the end of the game Galbally manager
Johnny Wallace was pragmatic about his side's performance:
"I'm disappointed that we did not win, but I cannot
say a word about the performance of the Galbally lads out
there today. To the man they fought to the end and I am
proud of each and every one of them. We now have to beat
the University of Limerick and hope that Hospital-Herbertstown
can do us a turn by beating Fr Casey's." While
Galbally were relieved at their last-minute escape from
the jaws of defeat, Fr Casey's will look back on this
game as one they should really have won. They played some
fluent football at times, working the ball intelligently
from defence to attack and finding their players with
accuracy with well-placed passes from both hand and foot.
Their midfield partnership of Tony Scannell and Liam
Quirke enjoyed the lion's share of possession against
Jeremy Staunton and Patrick Ryan and with most of their
attacks operating through the silken skills of centre
forward Tom Fitzgerald, the Abbeyfeale lads at times
looked a class apart. Johnny Wallace's advice to his
players at half time had a significant influence on the
outcome of the tie: "Keep Tom Fitzgerald out of the
game," he told his marker, "and you will have
done a good evening's work." The fact that the Fr
Casey's centre forward scored only two points during the
second 30 minutes showed how tight the Galbally defence
became during the second period. Playing against the
breeze, Galbally got of to a flying start with points
from Jeremy Staunton and Denis Ryan in the first two
minutes. Similar efforts from Tom Fitzgerald and Paul
Sugrue for Casey's levelled matters but a point from
Seamie Morrissey and a Pat Byrne goal put Galbally 1-3 to
0-2 ahead after eight minutes. Fr Casey's then began to
turn on the style and a point from Tony Scannell, two
from Tom Fitzgerald and a wonderful score from Pádraig
O'Donnell following an eight-man move, brought the teams
level once again. Three further points from O'Donnell and
one from Fitzgerald emphasised Fr Casey's superiority at
this stage and Galbally breathed with relief when a
Johnny Colbert goal was disallowed just before the half
time whistle. Galbally started the second half as they
did the first with points from Eddie Scully and Jeremy
Staunton. Tom Fitzgerald replied with a Fr Casey's point
and one minute later it was 12 points to 1-5 in favour of
the Abbeyfeale side thanks to a truly well-taken score.
Substitute Shay McAuliffe, who made an impression when
introduced at the break, fielded well outside the square,
passed intelligently inside and Tom Scannell added the
score. Mike McGrath for Galbally and Brendan Walsh for
Casey's traded points before the black and whites
launched their late comeback that brought them parity at
the very last minute. This was a game that portrayed
local football as competitive, attractive and of a
reasonably high standard. It was a sporting contest
between two very committed sides - both of whom will be
hoping for different results in the final series of games.
