John Franklins Homepage , John is an expert witness on cycle safety and the author of "Cyclecraft; Skilled Cycling Techniques for Adults" of particular interest to Galway cyclists is his summary of research on cycle path safety.

The Cycle Campaign Network their newsletters and position papers are a "must read" for any cycle advocate

The Bicycle Research Reports of the European Cyclist's Federation, only available in German at the moment.

John Forester is one of the fathers of cycle advocacy and has written many papers on the the issues of cycling and cycle safety.

The Cambridge Cycling Campaign has very comprehensive web site with links to many useful documents, of note are their own position papers on such things as "Left turn lanes", "One way Streets" and "Advanced Stop Lines" these are available in pdf format. (Irish legislation does not currently permit the construction or use of advanced stop lines.)

Newsgroups

These are good places to lurk and find out what the current thinking is on a range of issues ie_cycling is new all Ireland list for irish cycling activists. Elsewhere urbancyclist-uk is highly recomended, while the Chainguard  list is the daddy of them all!  You never know, you might subscribe yourself! (The Dublin-cycling is now defunct but the archives still contain interesting debates)

The Facts About Cycle Helmets

Cyclehelmets.org The website of an international coalition of people with a special interest in cycling and cycle helmets. The coalition includes doctors, cycling safety experts, statisticians and people with professional involvement in helmet design and performance.

Cyclists Rights Action Group (CRAG) set up by Australian bicycle users in response to the disaster caused by that country's cycle helmet law.

Cycle-helmets.com This site documents the effects of the cycle helmet law on the bicycle users of Western Australia, it also contains useful international links and reviews.

For any NUI, Galway bicycle users here are links to selected summaries of other research papers available via the PUBMED system, of the National Institutes for Health in the U.S. (These links may not be available outside the university.)

Here is the abstract from a UK study on the effects of cycle helmets: the main finding: if pedestrians and motorists wore helmets it would save 12 times more lives than if cyclists wore them.

Here is the abstract . from another paper on the issue, the finding: the evidence on cycle helmets is limited and safety efforts should focus on accident reduction rather than on injury reduction.

A study on the effects of the Australian Cycling Helmet legislation, the main result: A massive fall in cycle use leading to a net reduction in health for the nation, helmets for motorists have the potential to save 17 times as many lives as helmets for cyclists
