Historical Levels of Cycle Use in Galway City

1979 Study of bicycle travel in Galway city.

Relative proportions:

  • Morning traffic:     For every 100km travelled by car 11 km were travelled by bicycle
  • Afternoon traffic:  For every 100km travelled by car 19 km were travelled by bicycle

1991 census data

Of 14,411 permanent private households fully 39% (5624) did not have a car.

Modes of transport for journeys of 2 miles and under.

    • Foot journeys 6801 miles,
    • Bicycle journeys 2640 miles,
    • Bus journeys 814 miles,
    • Motorcycle journeys 127 miles,
    • Motor car journeys (drivers and passengers combined) 4809 miles.

In 1991 for typical short urban journeys, foot and bicycle use outweighed motor car use by a factor of almost two. For short journeys, for every mile travelled by bicycle there were only 1.8 miles travelled by car.

1996 census data

Following proportions for trips to school, college and work by the vulnerable modes (foot, cycle and motor cycle)

    • Children Aged 5-12:                          37.4 % travel by vulnerable modes
    • Students Aged 13-18:                       47.7 % travel by vulnerable modes
    • Students Aged 19 and over:             81.5 % travel by vulnerable modes
    • Persons at work aged 15 and over: 30.0 % travel by vulnerable modes

Overall in the city % travel to work/full time education by foot and bicycle was 38.2% vs. 43.7% by motor car.  In the following corporation divisions foot/bicycle use was the major form of transport.

    • City Centre                    56.40%  (Car 23.10%)
    • Salthill/Claddagh          44.50%  (Car 40.70%)
    • Shantalla/Taylors Hill    50.20%  (Car 32.00%)
    • Newcastle/Dangan       54.50%  (Car 32.50%)
    • Wellpark/Mervue           41.40%  (Car 34.4%)
