The Praetorian

 

            The Praetorian is a sub-class of the fighter that specializes in being a excellent guard and when the time comes, a skilled duelist. The Praetorian must have a minimum of a 13 str, 12 int, 12 con, 10 wis, 14 dex, if the character has a 16 or higher in all these stats they can gain a 10% experience point bonus. The praetorian fights on the fighter table as a fighter of equal level and gets 1-8 (d8) hit points per level. Praetorians can receive exceptional strength and con bonuses as per a fighter.  The Praetorian has attacks per round as a fighter of three levels higher i.e. a 3rd level Praetorian has the attacks of a 6th level fighter. The Praetorian starts with 4 weapon proficiencies and learns new weapons quickly, at the rate of 1/1. If the Praetorian is using a weapon he/she is nor familiar with, the penalty is -2. Any weapon the Praetorian has a proficiency in he/she gains a hit and damage bonus in regards to their level. This bonus represents the superior training and skill of the character as well as an assassin-like know how of when and where to hit opponents. This bonus applies to all melee and ranged weapons the Praetorian is skilled with.

            In addition to the above fighting ability, the Praetorian is skilled in the stealthy arts. The Praetorian has the following thief abilities as a thief of the same level: Open Locks, Move Silently, Hide in Shadows/Outdoors, Hear Noise, & Climb Walls. In addition to these skills, the Praetorian has the poison skill as per the assassin class and a learned level of skill in the social arts. Due to their alert and ever-vigilant nature, the Praetorian is only surprised on a 1 in 8 ( 1 in a d8).

Limitations:

            The Praetorian is limited to non-bulky armor types: Chain mail, Studded leather, and Leather. Due to the nature of the tasks the praetorian undertakes to ensure the safety of his liege, the may only be of a lawful alignment. The praetorian has a duelists code of honor. They use stealth and surprise as duty that befits their station, they prefer to defeat their opponents in honorable combat.
