Dart Digger

The Dart Digger travels in packs with others of it's kind. They roam the landscape looking for burrowing creatures to dig up and eat. They are excellent diggers and can move earth at an alarming rate. Dart Diggers are not aggressive to creatures larger than it self. They will usually run away from anything that is of greater size then the Dart Digger. If something tries to attack the Dart Digger it will let lose a mass of barbed projectiles that are contained in small openings in it's skin. These darts fly with great speed, being able to penetrate heavy armor at close range. The darts cover a partial radius from the back half of the creature of about 30 feet, anything in that radius will be struck several times. If the Dart Digger is still pressed it will defend it's self with it's massive jaws. Dart Diggers don't work in groups, if one is being attacked-the rest will run away- the self preservation instinct is great in these creatures. Usually they travel in groups of around 20 adults, children making up have that number. Dart diggers have excellent sense of smell and good eyesight. They can smell most creatures coming from quite a distance and are able to smell their prey even if under several feet of earth.

  Battle Tactics:

Dart Diggers are not fighters, they prefer to run. If attacked they will flee and launch a volley of darts at their attacker. Several hundred darts will fly out, the closer to the point of launch, the more deadly. A human sized target can be torn to a pile of flesh in a split second at close range. The darts are barbed and are difficult to remove. If the creature is still attacked, then it will turn and bite with it's massive jaws. The Dart Digger's bite can sever a limb right through sturdy armor. The Dart Digger will always attempt to flee first, it will only fight if cornered. They can sprint fairly fast even on their short legs. Dart Diggers will also burrow as a means of escape.

Habitat:

Dart Diggers live in planes and very light forest, they prefer warmer climes so you won't encounter them in areas with long cold spells. Dart Diggers like wide open spaces-they roam constantly.

Ecology:

Dart Diggers travel in packs of about 20-40 adults. The males and females are usually about equal number. They mate all year round and the litter of 4-12 pups stay wit the mother for a year before going out on their own. Dart diggers live for 15-25 years, the females live closer to 25 and the males closer to 15. Dart Diggers are excellent diggers but never make permanent dens to live in. The only time they make dens is when they are hiding from predators.

  Description:

Dart diggers are a mustard yellow in color with brown hues on their underbelly. They have sparse, coarse fur that covers their torso-the legs and head are bear. On the Dart Diggers backside are several hundred black spots about the size of a dime, these spots are really the holes for the creatures darts. Dart Diggers have small eyes on the sides of their faces and huge jaws that take up most of their head. They have swept back ears and a long snout with two small nostrils.
