Devourer From The Sky

The Devourer From The Sky Is a creature of such a fearful countenance that it is only spoken in hushed tones if at all. The Devourer From the Sky is a beast of mythological proportions, many believe it does not exist, or so they say. The Devourer leaves no survivors, those that claim to have seen one are usually driven mad by the sheer size of the beast, they are unable to comprehend such a terrible creature. Know one knows where the Devourer comes from or if it is intelligent or evil, all they know is that it come to feed. The Devourer feeds on all things living; Plants, animals, people etc. The Devourer will even feast upon undead, somehow gaining sustenance from their undead energies. The Devourer is a creature so massive that it can blot out the sun in it's passing. Some suspect that these creatures come from another world or lay dormant for many years before surfacing to feed. If several of these creatures were feeding all the time, the world would be ravaged in a few short years according to the sages. Many tales have been told to children by their parents of the Devourer from the Sky, how it will come for them if they are not good.

Battle Tactics:

The Devourer main goal is too feed, it has a preference for live creatures so it is naturally attracted to areas of civilization where the most food is packed into the smallest area. The Devourer "attacks" by its swarm of pod creatures that are tethered to the Devourer's main body. These Pod Creatures are winged and are excellent flyers, swooping down upon their victims and eating them in their massive jaws. The now chewed-up food is sent back to the main body via the tether. The Tether is Very difficult to target (-6) but will sever after taking only a small amount of damage. If the tether is severed, the Pod creature is slain. Usually, it will be snatched up by one of the remaining pods and eaten. A Devourer will fly over a town and unleash it's pods to eat everything it can. It has no real ability to direct attacks, usually 1-6 pods will attack a given target until one of them gets it, then they move on to other prey. A Devourer From the Sky will have between 100-500 pods, once it loses half of it's pods it will leave the area to regrow the destroyed pods, after which time it return to the same locale to feast again. If all of it's pods are destroyed, then and only then will a Devourer not return immediately to a give area.

The Devourer itself is so massive and covered with a thick armor plating that regular melee and missile weapons have no real chance of damaging the creature. Siege engines cause 1/10 to 1/4 damage at best, magical fire lighting etc. also damage at a reduced (1/6) effect. Very power magic weapons may be able to do a very small amount of damage, so little that you would drop dead from exhaustion before you could kill it with a magic sword. The only way to defeat a Devourer is to kill all of it's pods or develop a massive weapon(s) or spell(s) that could destroy the creature. GM's use your best judgment; defeating this creature could be a campaign all of it's own.

Habitat:

The Devourer is happy in any clime. It will tend to be found in areas where food is plentiful. Areas of extreme cold or heat have smaller concentrations of life so the Devourer would less likely be found there than a more temperate area that had towns and cities to feed upon. Where these creatures rest is anybody’s guess.

Life Cycle:

The Devourer lives for hundreds of years, no one has ever found the body of one so they could be immortal for all anybody knows. If by some chance one was killed or a dead one was found, it's body would have all the undigested possessions of it's victims inside it's body. Literally thousands of individuals possessions would be trapped in the innards of a Devourer. Things such as leather or parchment would be destroyed but most metal and defiantly all magic would be preserved.

No one knows how they reproduce if they are intelligent, have a culture etc. They appear to be eating machines, maybe of magical construction or from another world or plane of existence.

Description:

The Devourer from the Sky is roughly cigar shaped, a deep brown in color. It measures from 150-400 yard long, the "head" being rounded and the rest of the body ending in a thinning cigar-like shape. The Devoureer has no discernible mouth, ears, or eyes that anyone has seen.  Along the length of it's body are several holes, in these holes the pod creatures reside. The Pod creatures look like fleshy reptiles with wings. They have massive jagged jaws and a dozed eyes of varying size the cover it's head. The tail end of the pod creatures ends in the long tether that can span several hundred yards.

Noteworthy:

These creatures are legends. An entire game could be developed from just defeating one of these. If your players choose to stand and swing their swords at it they will most likely die. This creature is stronger, more powerful than a army, armies fight these creature and die so keep this in mind if you choose to introduce it into your campaign.
