Worms

Summary

Genre: Strategy
Number of players: 1-4

Review

Most people would think, quite naturally, that the Worm is in fact a peaceful creature, far more likely to leg it (if they could) than start a fight with another of the same species. However, thanks to the rather twisted minds of Team 17, we're thrown into a world of total worm carnage. Your sole objective - destroy all opposing worms as violently as possible!

Gameplay: Actually, it doesn't matter how you destroy them at all. The game basically involves two or more teams of worms who are placed all around a map trying to destroy each other. You can play against other humans, or take on the computer. Either way, the game is a turn based affair. When your turn comes around, one of your worms is selected, and you can either fire one of the many weapons at your disposal, or move the worm into a good strategic position for your next turn with that worm.

The game is great fun. There's actually quite a bit of strategy required to win, as well as the need to practise to hone your skills. And there is such a huge variety of weapons to use, some of them actually quite amusing. It's quite a simple game to play - but it's extremely good fun....

Challenge: The computer at the highest setting is extremely hard to beat. They hit you with practically every shot, no matter where you are on the map - often their shots are so accurate that the blast annihilates your worm first hit, by either throwing him off the map, or into some lava. It's not impossible to beat them - but it will take you some time to get up to their level of skill.

Graphics: Not too good to be honest. They're not terrible, but it's quite obviously not one of the newer games out. The backgrounds are simplistic enough, but they are quite varied, which is never a bad thing. The worms themselves aren't too bad, but they're not exactly anything to write home about.

Sounds: No music in the game, but the worms do pop up with some rather amusing phrases when the use their weapons. Not too bad.

Multiplayer: Very good fun, although a certain level of trust is required, because due to the PC controls it's entirely possible for your opponent to take your turn for you before you manage to wrench the mouse out of their mitts. Apart from that it's extremely addictive and entertaining multiplay that accomodates quite a few different people, each with their own teams. Top stuff, and certainly one of my favourite multiplayer games on the PC.

Summing up: Extremely addictive gameplay featuring worms. What more could you want?

Maverik's opinion: A surprisingly high score from His Cheesiness, but I agree in the main with his review. I wouldn't give Worms as good a score, but it sure is top fun to play, particularly blowing a hilariously-named worm off a cliff into a bunch of mines. Good, wholesome fun. Graphics and sounds still need quite a bit of improvement, though, and the AI should have been made to make a mistake every now and then. A classic game, however.
