w a c k o 2 k [wacko tutorial]   t u t o r i a l s

You want to get started on Wacko MUCK but have no idea how...you're perplexed about paging, lost about links...you're a disgruntled mess. Well never fear, the UHW (Unoficial Helpful Wackos) are here to help. Just thumb through the sections below which are helpfully titled so you only have to read what you need to. Then when you think you've got it: Click Here!!! for instant connection to Wacko MUCK at wacko.wizardsworks.org 6003.

Getting Started

or

Help I Don't Know How To MUCK

Okay, asuming you know how to work a telnet program we're going to to straight in to telling you how to connect to Wacko. First thing you need to do is get to the opening screen. The wizards have an annoying tendency to change it but don't let it fool you! All you have to do is type: create Name password....only don't use name and password! For instance if you wanted a character named John_Doe and iluvwacko as your password you'd type create John_Doe iluvwacko. Don't think you want to stick around permanently? No problem. Just type connect guest guest and you can wander around as the guest character. What do I do when I want to come back? Once again no problem. Going back to our example, this person would just type connect Jon_Doe iluvwacko on the next visit.

Making Contact

or

How to Contact Other Players

There's several ways to contact other players. The first is with the say and pose commands. The say command is what you generally use to talk to other players. For instance if good old John_Doe wanted to greet everybody awake in the room he'd simply type say hello. The response he would get would be You say "hello." but everybody else would see John_Doe says, "hello." The other command to use is the pose command. This can be abbreviated by using the : plain and simple. Take for instance if John_Doe wanted to give somebody a hug...he'd just type :hugs Bay. The output everybody in the room would see is John_Doe hugs Bay. The next way to communicate with players in the immediate room is the whisper command (abbreviated wh). If John_Doe wanted to use this command to whisper to Bay he'd type wh Bay=hey there. If he did this, the whole room would not see it: only Bay. Similar to the whisper command is the page command. This is takes the same format as whisper (i.e. page bay=hey there. or p bay=hey there). Now for one that's strictly limited to Wacko...the esp command. ESP is the equivalent of pulling somebody into a private chat room on IRC so to speak. Let's say John_Doe wants to ESP to Bay. First he'd type esp -set Bay. Then he'd use esp like the say command mentioned above and only Bay would hear it. Want to communicate with lots of people? No problem..that's what the Think Channel is for. Lots of people listen to the think channel, and you can turn it on by typing think -on. Then just use think like you would the above mentioned say command (i.e. think hey guys). Now that you've got the basics on that, time to move on to something else.

Where Are They?

or

How to Find Out Who and Where People Are

Now how do I find out who else is on Wacko with me? Easily! All you have to do is remember one command: who That's it...just who. If you type who in lower case you'll see a list of people, whether or not they have a plan/project file set, and what their current @doing is (more on doings later). If you type WHO in all capital letters, you'll get a list of the people, how long they've been connected, and how long they've been idle (not typing). If you type where, you get a list of people, how long they've been idle and what room they're in. How do you get to a person? First...and I can't stress this enough...Page and ask if it's alright to come in!!! I'm a five year veteran of the net and I've spent the better part of it MUCKing. If you don't page first you could jump in on something that was not meant for your eyes! After you get an okay, then simply type jump playername. (i.e. jump john_doe). The best way to get around Wacko though is by simply walking around. This is done by looking at the names of exits (Ways ta go:) and then typing in one of them. There's lots of hidden exits and fun things to find, so if you explore you never know what you'll come upon. Want to find out more about the people you're talking to? Well first off you can look at their description. The best way to do this (if they're in the room with you) is type look playername (i.e. look john_doe). If they aren't in the room it's just as easy. Type scan playername (i.e. scan john_doe). If you want to take a look at their plan/project file just type who playername (i.e. who john_doe)

Personalizing Your Character

Or

How I Spent 20 Minutes On-Line Without Talking...

Want to set your desc and plan file? This is what this section is for. To enter a description for yourself type mdesc me The program will prompt you from there. Be careful about what you enter in your desc as everybody in the MUCK can see it at any time! Now for how to set your project file...type chfn That's it...just chfn. Once again the program will prompt you. Want to let people know what you're doing? Type @doing Sitting And Learning Wacko. Now that's what your doing will be on the above mentioned who list.

Final Notes and Dislaimers

If you get stuck, remember there are lots of friendly people around to help you out and get you out of a bind....but only if you are nice to them. Wacko is more or less a family oriented environment, so we discourage public vulgarity/netsex/etc. etc. etc. If you're going to do something like that then do it in the privacy of your own room with the thought in mind that you're building yourself a reputation... If you need to talk to somebody about technical trouble then our wizards are ch'od and Den. If you need general help or can't get something mentioned in this tutorial to work then type uhw when you connect. This will bring up a list of Unofficial Helpful Wackos to page for assistance. Why did I write this? Let's just say I have lots of friends who are geared to IRC and not MUCK and are too bashful to learn or page people to find out what to do. So I wrote this guide so that they'd be able to find out quickly what to do. Once again: red-branch.mit.edu 6003 is the address. My name on there is Bay. If I'm not on you can mail me by typing mail Bay. Feel free to page and I'll see you all on the WaCkY side!
