Gamma Alpha History
The rich and prolific history of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a tribute and dedication to the imagination of our twenty-two visionary founders. The goals, indeals, and convictions which embody the success of this illustrious sorority, are vividly protrayed in our public motto:"Intelligence is the torch of wisdom." The introduction of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc to the campus of Xavier University of Louisiana occurred when four women: Leona Andry, Helena Dorian, Mattie Jase, and Billie Girion who attended Xavier were initiated into the Beta Gamma Chapter at Dillard University.  On May 12, 1940, the Alpha Eta Sigma Chapter was established on Xavier's campus.  The first line initiated into the chapter consisted of the following women: Andrey Elliot (Vice President), Ellsworth Whaley (DP), Alcolm Washington (Sergeant at Arms), Alice Lecense (Secretary), Lorraine Laneuville( (President), and Marie Creghton (Treasurer).  Although established in May, the chapter did not organize until the fall of 1940.  Eventually the chapter was renamed Gamma Alpha.
The first public appearance by the members of Gamma Alpha Chapter was a Halloween party sponsored by the chapter for the incoming Xavier women, freshmen, and new students. In the Spring of 1930, Audrey Elliot was elected Miss Xavier, beginning the long legacy of Delta women as Miss Xavier. From the establishment of the chapter until 1950, the members of the Gamma Alpha Chapter sponsored numerous events with other fraternities and sororities. The members were actively involved in the Panhellenic Council and Interorganizational Councils. However, in 1950, the officials of Xavier University expelled all Greek organizations from the campus. The administration felt these organizations were no longer a positive influence on Xavier's campus. In the spring of 1970, Gamma Alpha was rechartered with the following members: Marvine Augustus, Karen Ann Carter, Shirley Jean Hawell, Linette Consuelo Jalvia, Deborah Ann Lofton, Natalie Elaine Mitchell, Dianna Mosley, Julia Ann Simmons, and Saudra Elaine Thompson. The members of the Gamma Alpha Chapter continue to surpass the expectations for service, scholarship, and sisterhood. This chapter has spearheaded and participated in numerous projects involving the community such as Teen Lift, School America, and Habitat for Humanity. All the positive, intelligent, and dedicated women of the Gamma Alpha Chapter are committed to fulfilling the legacy of the women who have preceded us. Today, our challenge to each woman is: Bring forth your special and unique contributions and skills, in order that we as a people can continue to write history.
