| MY VIEWS ON BREEDING! |
| This is my experience with breeding. first and most important not ALL poms/people are NOT cut out for breeding. Genetics are very important. The internet and pet supply stores on breeding can be your answer if you are cut out for it!!! Please think long and carefully about it, don't just jump into it!! My family and I thought long and hard about it before we even considered it. I feel it is important to first mention the male you choose. the male should be very closely to the same size as your female. It can be smaller, but should no be much larger. If you choose a male that is to large for the female, the puppies are likely to be large for the female to have without having a c-section delivery. Like all other, dogs go into heat approximatley every 6 monthes. The heat lasts about 3 weeks. You need to watch your female very closley during this period mainly to be sure a unwanted males doesn't breed with her. I found it to be helpful to keep heat calenders on my female so I know when to expect it. At the begginging of a heat, the vulva will swell and she will bleed. You need to check them everyday when the heat is close becasue small poms don't bleed much and it is easy to miss with all the hair they have. Also, it is important to watch closley you can catch the first or second day. timing is important. She will bleed for the first day of heat. The breeding period is usually 10-15 days from the start of heat. This is when the female will accept the male and breeding takes place. I put my female with the chosen male starting on the 10th day. I watched them to see show she reacted. the male will follow her every move literally driving her mad. If she is ready , she will stand still for him. If she's not, she will snap at him and try to stay away. Sometimes she will snap at him for awhile and all off a sudden let him breed her. We usually left them alone for an hour or two. If they did not breed by then, I would seperate them and try again the next day. Try this everyday for a couple of hours. Eventually they will breed. My Vet spent alot of time of the phone with me answering tons of questions but he most obvious and easiest is usually the first breed will do the trick and let nature take its course. After the 14th or 15th day, the female usually won't breed during the time, but the males around will still smell her and want to breed. continue too keep her away from any males as they will fight over her we found out!! Mark your calander the first time shes breeds. Make sure "mom" eats well during this period, the vet says if it would make me feel better feed her puppy vitamins otherwise as long as she's on a good diet I have nothing to worry about. The gestation period last about 63 days from first breeding. I can't take the susupence and am brining Gza Gza to the vet between 4-6 weeks because with the smaller breeds iths much harder to tell even the vet told me that. Wish my family luck and lets pray for healthy beautiful pupps!! thanks a zillion and maybe my experiece can help you! P.S. I studied alot, asked alot of questions and took notes. In time you'll feel comfortable and be able to write your own views on breeding. Questions, comments? Visit my home page and there's a guestbook to sign or my phone number. Thanks Nancy Schlager.
