The beach was just perfect that day,

the waves were breaking just right,

It's days like these that you savor when you live away,

While out in the first set the beach is far from sight,

I was busy praying and contemplating the beauty of this place,

When from a short distance I saw a familiar face,

You were doing your best to catch me off guard,

I could see the look of disappointment in your eyes,

Before I knew it the closing set hit me hard,

Coming up sputtering I tried to come up with plausible lies,

A reason for such a foolish mistake,

Yet all my attempts failed as you pressed your finger to my lips,

And in your arms your kiss I did partake,

You smiled and held me close in the watery deep,

Our long friendship's harvest we now did reap,

"Must you go?" she whispered in my ear,

I do not deny this was a moment I had felt great fear,

"Yes, I must...and if you truly love me you'll let me go."

She put her hands over my eyes and with a weak voice she responded, "Yes. I know."
