You see me in the shadows,
Though you pass me by without thought,
I stood there as the rain came down,
You walked past and lowered your head,
I wouldn’t tolerate it anymore,
You look back and stop a moment,
It is then that I rush to your side as the sky thunders,
You grip your coat firmly as tears trail down your cheek,
My hands grip your shoulders and turn you around,
You stare into my concerned eyes as the tears flow,
I bring you close to me and embrace you in my arms,
You hold onto me and sob, we stand together,
So there we stood as the rain pored down,
I took off my coat and put it over you,
You looked up suddenly, almost shocked at my action,
I whispered in your ear, “Let’s get something to eat.”
We walked down the street as the sky continued,
The towering buildings were a blur to us as we walked,
Finally we found a small café buried in the chaos,
You looked up at the sky one last time,
I got the door for you, we walked in together,
The shop was dimly lit, with some light jazz playing out of old speakers,
You smiled at the sight and smell of coffee,
I took your coat and motioned to T-Bone with my hand,
T-Bone nodded in understanding and started the espresso,
We sat down at one of the couches near the door and looked out the window,
The storm worsened as T-Bone dropped off our drinks,
You looked down with a quizzical gaze,
I smiled and said, “It’s the ZT Special, you’ll like it,”
We sat the speechless for a while just sipping our coffee,
Listening as the music trailed off she asked me,
“Who are you?”
I smiled once more and replied, “Just someone for you to take comfort in,”
That was eight years ago...back then we were strangers,
Now eight years later, we are a fusion of love and joy.
