Type of Structure: English Gothic-Revival Residence
Year(s) of Construction: Built in 1893 to replace a previous residence that burned down a year before. It's design was based on Alnwick Castle, Northumherland, England.
Designer/Builder: Horace Trumbauer (1869-1938)
Stone Carver(s):
Materials: Grey Stone (quarried in Chestnut Hill, PA) & Indiana Limestone (used for the trim).
Location: On the campus of Beaver College. Beaver will soon be known as Arcadia University.
Interesting Features: The "castle" has many "functioning" gargoyles and grotesques. The oddly shaped chimneys are also interesting.
Personal Observations: I am happy to live only ten minutes away from this beautiful building. My daughter and I have vsisited it several times.
Along with all those wonderful gargoyles are tales and stories of ghosts, haunted rooms, frightened students, blood dripping walls (someone apparently watched The Shining too many times).
The Castle was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1985.
