Type of Structure: Gothic-Revival Church
Year(s) of Construction: 1874-1879 (with alterations in 1901)
Designer/Builder: Charles Marquedant Burns (1838-1922)
Materials:
Location: Where Pennswood Road intersects with New Gulph Road. The Shipley School and Bryn Mawr College are just down the road.
Interesting Features: Faces, flying buttresses, functional gargoyles (that seem to be different then the grotesques). Celtic crosses all over the graveyard. The rose window is magnificent!!!
The alterations of 1901 may account for the gargoyles "different" appearance and style.
Personal Observations: This is a WONDERFUL church with great carvings and a very kool graveyard. One thing I have noticed about this church is that many of the carving and stained-glass topics are about music and singing. The church sponsors many singing and music programs during the year.
Last Time Visited: The last time I was here was with my daughter Anna in November of 2000.
Website: There is, or was, a website. It is currently disabled and has been since last year.
