Bladefather Wichart strode into the Brotherhood’s dining hall. Save for the tap of wooden spoons on wooden bowls, the hall was silent. Wichart shook his head slowly.
“Brothers,” he addressed them in that strange voice of his which seemed to speak directly and quietly to each man in the great hall. “I understand your grief over the brothers we have lost, and the responsibility you feel for each of the brave state troops who fought under our command. Such thoughts weigh heavily on me also, but now is not the time to dwell on them. You can read the signs as well as I. In your travels you have seen how evil seems to be everywhere and growing. The strength of Chaos waxes again. Perhaps, to a level not seen since our founder drove back the dark forces and reunited the Empire. Another great war against Chaos looms and the first battles are already being fought. This was such a battle, and though it was not without cost, it was a great victory, worthy of both story and song. So, rejoice in your continued life. Thank Sigmar that you may still fight evil and listen to the tales of the others in battle, so that our next victory will come with less blood and loss."
Though he had a good overview of the battle from the other commanders, Wichart mingled and listened. He heard about the left flank where the Spearmen with detachments of Acolytes (Halberds) and their Verloren Haufe (Free Company detachment) faced off against some Chaos Marauders. The Spears had charged unsupported against the Marauders and were driven off, but luckily were not caught. Their charge did succeed in drawing out the Marauders however, and when the Marauders charged the spears, they were broken by the counter charge of the Verloren Haufe.
Wichart knew of the middle part of the battle field, where his knights twice advanced into position to charge the flank of the Dragon Ogres and their leader, but were foiled on both occasions, by strange circumstances. The first time, as the Dragon Ogres crashed into the Guardians of the Blade (Greatswords), Wichart saw his friend Gerhard's final act of bravery. As a rent in reality opened and dragged Gerhard (BSB) into himself, the knight threw clear his Blade of Judgment. Inspired, by this act, the Guardians fought like Sigmar himself and drove off the Dragon Ogres and Chaos Lord while losing only one of their number. Near the end of the battle, these two groups again clashed, but this time, the Guardians fled like elves even though help, from both Wichart's knights and the Judges (Inner Circle knights led by a priest) was nearby.
Wichart consoled himself over the escape of Chaos Lord by remembering how his knights had slain and shattered a group of Chaos Warriors, and had dispatched the group of Screamers that had charged them. The thought of the Screamers brought sadness of its own though as remembered the fall of Lambi (the Hand of Justice) and Firewind (Lambi's Pegasus). Though Lambi survived and would likely fight again, Firewind had not been so lucky.
Moving on, he heard tales of the right flank, where Bladefather Darius had, eventually, led the Judges on a glorious charge which utterly destroyed a group of warriors who had considered themselves the Chosen of the Dark Gods. He heard of the Swordsmen who, like the Spears on the other side charged their foes (a group of Gors) and could inflict no damage, before retreating and luring the Gors forward. The swords re-grouped, and the counter-charging Verloren Haufe defeated the Gors charge. These lost men pursued the beasts headlong into a Giant. Those who still lived told of how they had ravaged the legs of the brute before his smell and screams broke their spirit. The swords then had to again brace themselves and were proud to tell of how they stood, head to thigh, with the brute until night fell.

Overall, a good battle. Some weird rolls for both sides. My BSB failing his Ld 9 check and being sucked into the Realm of Chaos on turn 2, followed by his Dragon Ogres on their first charge managing to kill 0 Greatswords, but this actually helping them as they broke and were no longer in the charge arc of the Grand Master and his Knights of the White Wolf. My Swordsmen and Free Company inflicting, over 3 rounds of combat, no wounds on the Gors, but beating them and the Free Company pursuing into the Giant and doing 2 wounds with 6 attacks. By the end, the Empire won by just over 800 points, as the only Chaos units left were 3 Dragon Ogres with a Tzeentch Lord on a Daemonic Mount and the Giant. I had lost the Hand of Justice (hero on a peg.), my BSB, 3 of the 6 detachments, all the Greatswords, my Huntsmen, and had another detachment with 2 of 9 men left.
