The remaining members of
Sigismund's company trudged wearily in through
the gates of Praag. Conspicuous by their absence were the villagers
that
the company had been sent to save. While Sigismund strode to the keep
to
deliver a formal report, Volker gathered a crowd about him in a nearby
tavern.
"A black day boys, a black
day this. We reached the fleeing settlers at
the same time as the foul spawn of the false gods. The shell of an
abandoned farmhouse marked the middle of the battlefield. To the east
ran a line of fence, and a short ways off to the west was a small copse
of trees that once must have served as a windbreak. Sigismund wisely
deployed the cannons on top of a small hill to the southwest, with
the
hot pot beside them. Further to the west, the settlers turned their
War
Wagon back to face their pursuers. Beside them, a group of Horse Archers
waited. Sigismund and I waited with the Halbreds just east of the hill.
At the base of the hill on our right were the crossbows and a group
of
woodsmen serving as archers. On our other flank was the volley gun,
our
two units of little men, and the survivors of the raid, now convinced
of
the world's imminent destruction. Across the field from west to east
were a group of blood hounds (chaos hounds), some flying beastmen
(harpies), a block of soulless warriors, a chariot in which rode one
with which the winds of magic blew strongly, a second block of warrior,
a huge creature in black armor on a hell steed armed with a cruel
mockery of the peaceful farmers he had slain, a flail made from their
skulls, and finally a unit of their knights." Volker spit as said the
last word, showing he believed their no longer deserved the title.
"With the field split as
it was, our troops had a difficult time
finding shots, though the first volley dropped 3 soulless ones. The
horse archers advanced, as did the those in the grip of madness on
the
left flank. The missilers tried to position themselves for shots. The
winds of magic were fickle and remained so for the entire battle, with
only one spell being cast. Then the carnage began. All of the twisted
gods' children advanced in a classic pincher formation, save for the
harpies who took to the sky, and the hounds who charged the horse
archers. As planned the archers fled, to soon rally leaving the hounds
and the warriors on that flank in the open. The knights, chariot,
blooddancer (hero), and one block of warriors took shelter behind house
and fence. I was greatly surprised when the missilers claimed they
could
not see through the fence to shoot, but..."
"This must have confused
the gunners also, for from that point on, they
never hit for the rest of the battle, though they had many near misses.
An order must be sent to Nuln warning them about sending out
undertrained gunners. Our missile troops were once again ineffective
as
the settlers with more courage than brains charged their War Wagon
against the warriors. The rumbling contraption was slow though and
only
one warrior was crushed beneath it and the remainder proceed to
cut
down a steed and one of the settlers, forcing it away, and running
it
down as the remaining steed was unable to handle the entire load. The
flagellants were charged by the Chaos knights, but stayed put through
from some strange reason they only seemed to move about half speed
(I
forgot they have 2 attacks). The harpies dropped out of the sky on
the
hot pot, but the little men, seeing their food in danger fought like
tigers. They should be named as heroes as they fought the beastmen
to a
standstill until the later finally fled in panic (the 2 halflings,
one
being lost to a first round misfire, survived through 5 HtH rounds
with
5 harpies, evening managing a wound). The hero completed his run around
our flank, and the chariot smashed into the side of the crazed ones,
just was our halberds broke the warriors and hounds, running them both
down. At this point, things were promising. Each army had broken the
others flank, but we now had some time to use our missiles. Then it
happened. A huge burst of flame surrounded the hangunners. Where 8
once
stood, only 1 remained and he found himself facing to huge pink demons.
One of the twisted gods looked down on the field then and raised two
Chaos knights who had fallen. He also was impressed with the display
of
the little men and raised them also to man their stew pot. What they
saw
on the other side though must have been horrible as the pot never
actually got of a shot for the rest of the battle (two turns, two
misfires) In short order, as the halbreds tried vainly to return to
the
battle, Tancred (wizard) was run down by the chariot. The blooddancer
slew the crew
of the volley gun, and Marchisio (hero). The Chaos knights ran down
a unit of
little men, and the woodsmen who had joined us.
Mercifully the curtain of
night was then drawn across the battle field
and in the darkness we lost our pursuers. We were beaten, but not
defeated and one day revenge will be ours and my sword will sing a
sweet
song on the helmets of the twisted ones."
Finally victory points were- 1039 for Chaos vs. 631 for the Empire
Lessons learned/ reasons I lost
1) The War Wagon is not a chariot and cannot take on units by itself.
Even with six models inside, they are all human and that isn't very
good.
2) Dice suck. My hot pot misfired every time it tried to fire. My
cannons killed a total of 3 Chaos warriors and notched 3 or 4 misses
by
2 inches or less. The one spell that got off all game I rolled a 2
to
dispel needing a 3, my war wagon rolled 1 impact hit, his chariot rolled
7 (5 +2 for scythes), etc.
3) Fences block line of sight, even if they look like picket fences,
they are counted as walls or hedges as those are the only things
described in the rules.
4) Deploy volley guns on the FLANKS and expect that they will die,
but
at least that way they either get to shoot, or force a unit to charge
away from the rest of battle.
5) The charge is all important. Every combat except the war wagon
disaster was won by the side that charged.
6) Runefangs are great against Chaos rank and file.
7) Chaos is mean in HtH, even their horses fight better than Empire
Halbrediers.
8) Don't do anything halfway. Think of the Karate Kid- "You karate
yes,
okay, You karate no, okay, you karate do guess so, squish just like
grape."
9) Remember what you have given to your characters and use it. It
doesn't help to a have bows/x-bows, if you never fire.
