“The village is gone sir.”
        “What?!?”
“Gone. It is no longer there. It has been reclaimed by the forest.”
        “What happened, son?”
“The peasants, damn their cowardly hides, had reported being assaulted
by the forces of Chaos. Their mage had been killed and only the town’s
priest was keeping them from panicking. We quickly assembled a force and
marched to help.”

His army was, Glade Riders with general (HoD arrow) 8 models total, 3
units of archers, 1 unit of waywatchers, treeman, Mage (rod of power),
hero on a giant eagle, 6 Warhawks plus champ.)

Despite encountering signs of Chaos as we approached, we encountered no
foes. Meanwhile, the peasants nerve broke and they fled the village. Our
commander pressed the town militia into service to help fight a rear
guard action and give the weaker villagers time to escape. We were
informed that the enemy was hidden behind a large forest just west of
the village and in the fields surrounding this forest. We spread our
forces across the village to contain any BREAKTHROUGH the enemy may
attempt.  To the south of the village were a group of Horse archers in
front of the Hot Pot, and the Ogres, who screened the front of the
spears while the Lost Company flanked the spears to the south and the
archers to the north. In the village square were more Horse archers, a
group of Halfings, and our unit (the greatswords and detachment), then
to the north of the village was some halfings, the flagellants (thought I
was playing Chaos) the Winged Lancers and the archers screening the
Helblaster. (At this point, the game was already lost as too many of my
missile troops were on this one side). Across from us were large hedges
to the north and south of a outgrowth of forest.
Without warning, a group of Glade Riders and a Living Tree rushed
around the southern end of the hedges as a flight of arrows darkened the
sky. The arrows and arcane chant of Destruction killed four of the
southern group of horse archers, yet the one remaining stood his ground
and moved forward to delay the Glade riders. He was then crushed beneath
the bulk of the Living Tree. Seeing real foes on the north flank, our
unit, the crossbows, winged lancers, flagellants and helblaster all
started to march across the village (none made it into combat except the
Winged Lancers who were all destroyed on the charge by some Warhawks).
The Halflings and Handgunners entered into an inconclusive missile duel
with the archers behind the northern hedge. The inflicted few losses and
received more, but not enough to drive them from the field. (None of
these units will be mentioned any longer as they had no effect on the
battle).
The Ogres rushed forward in an ill-advised charge (total forgot the
rules of a stand and shoot reaction- don’t ask). Suffered a few arrows
and didn’t reach combat. The Horse archers from the village rushed forward into
the forest beside some darkly dressed scouts. The archers swung around
to fire at the Glade Riders while the spears and Lost Company advanced.
The Hot Pot fired, and landed just over the heads of the Lost Company
(my guess was about an inch short of the target, but the thing deviated
10 inches back towards my lines- only a omen of things to come.)
With a screech a Giant Eagle riding hero (yes it was the hero who
screeched not the Eagle) dropped down and slaughtered the Hot Pot crew.
The Warhawks killed the Lancers and the Treeman squashed the lone horse
archer. A Hail of Doom arrow from the WE general in the Glade Riders
killed 7 of the 10 archers, but they did not flee. Things were looking
grim.
After surviving more arrows, the Ogres and their leader finally made it
into combat. The Hero accepted a challenge from the WE champion
confident in his abilities despite having to strike over the hedge. He
missed, he died. (I did not roll a 6 to hit, he needed 4s to hit, 4s to
wound, and I need 4’s to save, he rolled two hits, two wounds, I rolled
two 3’s to save). The ogres didn’t suffer any wounds and killed 3 elves.
Combat is drawn. (This ended up being the most fun part of the game.
Next round, no wounds are scored, the Ogres break and run because of the
Elves standard, they run a whole 2 inches. The elves pursue a whole 4
inches, but because of the wall don’t catch the ogres. See it was all a
cunning plan by the ogres who rally, and beat off the elves’ charge. The
elves flee 5 inches, just back over the wall, the Ogres chase 3 inches
and don’t even make it over the wall. Aaaaaarrrrrrrrgggggghhhhhhhhh!)
While our march continued, the Glade Riders ran to chase down the
peasants. The Horse archers left the woods and circled behind the
southern most (and 3rd) archer unit. (They charge the rear, fail to
cause any wounds. Elves kill one horse archer. Elves don’t break. Next
round elves kill one horse archer, horse archers kill no elves, break
and flee 17 inches off the board.) Meanwhile, the Living Tree, Warhawks
and Eagle rider surround the spearmen. Seeing only one chance, the
spearmen try to charge the Treeman, but fear freezes them in place and
seals their doom.(Actually what happened was the Spearmen charge, The
Hero with a flail causes a wound. Yes the Treeman might break. Wait
Treemen cause fear, we forgot the fear test, okay, back everything up,
roll fear test, 11, never mind.) This doom was in the form of flashing
talons and flailing branches (even with ranks and standard which were
not negated by the flyers, how we played, I had -9 combat resolution).
That sir was the end of the battle. The elves simply out ran us through
the forest and though we fought our way back. Few will survive long
after the arrows are removed. Of the villagers, I fear the worst.
Well, what can I say, the final score was WE- Lots Empire-0
However I don’t flee too bad as I cannot think of a way I could have
possibly won that game, except by maybe winning the dice roll to go
first (better deployment would have helped also). Reasons
1. Having slow troops against WE is not a good idea.
2. Having little to no armour saves against WE is not a good idea.
3. Having to spread out your forces against WE is not a good idea.
All three applied to my army. I was forced to spread out because of the
scenario, and when he got the first turn, he got to the defensive
positions on the battlefield so I was screwed. Example 5 Ogres and a Hero
couldn’t beat 10 archers and a champion because of the damn wall. Had
the roles been reversed with the Empire attempt to break through the WE
army, I think I might have done better with the numerous screens (Ogres,
15 archers, Company of the Lost) and numerous ranks in the fighting
troops, but oh well. Record is now 1-7-3 (with the Empire it is 1-6-1).
Any comments on how I could have better fought the battle would be
appreciated.
