History: A gifted program was first begun in the El Paso Independent School District in 1981, although programs for advanced students had existed in the district high schools at least as far back as the late 1950's. Project Challenge, consisting of advanced reading and mathematics, began in 1983, and it was extended to fifth and fourth grades in 1984 and 1985. In 1988 it was revised and renamed Connection and included only the subjects of reading, language, and social studies. In 1990 a separate primary enrichment program, also referred to as Connections, was started. (In 1992 an enrichment program known as "Schoolwide" was implemented at some campuses, with more campuses added as the years have gone by.)
