World Like A Fish by Christopher A. Lane
Back to Poetry

without even unwrapping the blue plastic rain cover
he clutches the folded newspaper
and, with startling psychic ability
foresees the news:
they killed again
and the objects of their hatred died again
the economy is holding its collective breath
to see if people are in the spending mood
nations fighting
without actually fighting - smiles, a handshake, a great photo op
they are protesting
(whothehellknowsorcareswhatthistime)
the new movie is a big disappointment
all that money and talent down the commode
temps are running just above average
for this time of year
the city council is still pissed off
the famine in Ethiopia is still in full swing
they are still dropping like flies in South Africa
because of AIDS
too much rain/not enough in Mozambique
buy a new car with no money down
no payments for 18 months
two pages of terrifically "unfunny" funnies
want ads hawking and buying love

he thinks about canceling his subscription
and saving the delivery boy a stop on his route
but there are numbers that remain a mystery
until the blue plastic is pulled back
and the world flops out
like a fish
