I just saw an article in this thread that made me realize how great is to
be able to count myself in as an oldie when it comes to _Star Wars_.
I first saw it when I was 13, in London, England, in 1979 - in a huge
theatre with an excellent sound system. It was an incredible
experience! Much better than watching it on a TV set!
(I don't know why I didn't see it when it first came out - perhaps
because my family was getting ready to move overseas at the time).
Then there was the anticipation of _The Empire Strikes Back_ and the
excitement of going to the theatre to see it. Would it be as good?
Would it be better? I can't imagine the same anticipation as you extract
SW from the VCR and take TESB out of its box.
With TESB, I became seriously hooked on the trilogy. (And it wasn't a
trilogy then! Oh my ...) (And no, I wasn't "seriously p***ed" at Han's
being frozen like a previous article said "all of the females" did - I
_knew_ he would come back!)
And oh! The anticipation for _Return of the Jedi_. It came out a whole
month earlier in other cities than in mine. So I had to suffer through
trying to avoid all mention of it in the media (which was _not_ easy) to
try and not hear all the revelations. I bought all the magazines with
ROTJ in them, to be sure - I gave them to my brother with strict
instructions not to let me see them until I saw the movie.
And it was so much fun waiting in line to see it when it did arrive. You
just can't do that with the VCR!
Think of it, fellow oldies - we knew the SW universe before it was a trilogy.
We watched Harrison Ford become a major superstar over the years.
We were the first to take part in a major marketing phenomena, buying all
those sheets and baseball cards and figures and etc. Never before had a
movie been marketed in such a way. Where would Kenner be without us?
And now? The fun starts again! What will the next trilogy be like? I
can't wait!
