Licensed by the Presbytery of Dunblane 18 Sep 1750.
Ordained to St. Cuthberts Edinburgh 9th May 1754; presented by George III 31st July, trans. and adm. 31 Oct 1765. He was appointed Chaplain of Stirling Castle April 1766. A new church to seat fully 2500 which had been erected by the heritors at a cost of 4000 pounds sterling was opened by him 31 July 1775.Like his father he was Minister of St Ninians near Stirling. But between the ministires of father and son all but the tower of the church (which is still standing) was destroyed as the supporters of (Bonny) Prince Charles had blown it up to prevent its munitions falling into the hands of their victorious enemies.

His marriage to Mary Tait 20 Dec 1756 "Mr John Gibson Minr of the Gospel at St. Ninians & Miss Mary Tait D of the Alex Tait Mert in Ed now in SSW.P."

In the Revd. R. Polwhele's History of Devonshire in 3 Vols 1793-1806 the following is found "The town of Kenton itself may contain about seventy houses. The only decent houses in Kenton itself are those in possession of Mr. Collyns (the most eminent surgeon in all this neighbourhood) and of the Rev. R Polwhele (the author refers to himself!)
