1st Earl of Mar and Regent of Scotland. A charter in 1525 made his father captain and constable of Stirling Castle.
This John himself (1st Earl) was guardian of James V during his minority and subsequently of his daughter Mary Queen of Scots.
On 19th March 1566 (confirmed by Scottish parliament on 16th April) he was restored as captain of Stirling Castle, it having benn previously agreed that he should be guardian of the infant James VI.

Sir Lewis Bellenden of Auchinoul was appointed Justice Clerk in 1578, the year following his father's death. He was one of the conspirators in the treason known as the Raid of Ruthven and Godscroft represents him as extremely violent on the occasion [p.366]. He managed to avoid the ruin of the other conspirators and on 17 July 1584 he was appointed an ordinary lord of session in place of Sir Richard Maitland of Lethington. In 1585 he was resident in London in the service of James VI, when he acted much in the interest of Queen Elizabeth {Robertson's history vol ii p 301}.
He had a principal share in the downfall of Arran and the return of exiled lords, even though he had been sent by the former to accuse the latter at the court of Elizabeth. In the same year 1585 he was at Stirling when the anished lords surprised the king and Arran.In 1589 he accompanied James on his matrimonial exxcursion to Norway and in the following Spring he was sent as ambassador to Elizabeth, probably to notify her about the wedding. Among the charter of the lands which he obtained was the barony of Broughton and other lands erected into a free barony 15 Aug 1591. He died in the same month.

Thomas Collyns or Collins of Offwell purchased lands called KNOLL in Colyton 1579, having
been a co-tenant there previously. This was thus three years before the birth of his son James, christened in adjacent Farway. The association of Thomas Collyns with Collyton probably explains his grandson's incumbency there later.
This is according to the Mormon's ancestral file which has different descendants.
