James I of Scotland, reigned 1406-1437. Assassinated.
In the period 1424-37 his was the first strong Scottish monarchy for nearly a century.
On his release from captivity at the hands of the English in 1424 he was harsh to the nobility of Scotland - he arrested many and executed some others.
His popularity rested on improvements in justice for the common people.
