ISSUE ONE:
The first issue of the magazine has 14 or 15 different stories and/or articles. Some of them are text shorts and some of them are comic-style sequential pages. One of these sequential-art stories is the first issue of the feature, Mind's Overflow Comic, the history of which is explained below. What we do with the art though is something wild. What I'm calling an artistic Menage-a-trios has me drawing the layouts for the pages, then Jeff Plotkin uses a light box to put his characters on a blank page. When he's done, the art gets shipped back to New York where Rammer Martínez adds the backgrounds (also using a light box and my layouts).
But that's just one of the features of the magazine. We also have an amazing short-story from Australian-native, Christian Read. To me, it feels like a Tom Waits song come to life. I love it.
There's also some great shorts from Miguel Ortega, Howard Tuckey, Billy Horn, and Matthew Scott Carr.
And, if you like the picture-books, there are comic-style shorts from Dreamchilde Press, Travis Fox, and Jeff Plotkin.
All this, plus a lot of my ramblings, some behind the scenes stuff, and some awesome artwork from Rammer Martínez, Joe Kelly, Matt Huynh, and Mary Wiebe.
GENERAL MAGAZINE SPECS:
The Mind's Overflow Magazine is perfect bound anthology book consisting of all literary genres with a color cover and a B&W interior. This will be formatted in the style of anthology or 1960's style pulp magazine. There will be one ongoing feature story roughly 15 pages long that will appear in each issue. The rest is a rotating free-for-all.
Our hope is to feature independent writers and artists with the talent to produce quality material but who lack the proper outlet for their art. Anyone looking to gain a reputation for their work within the industry is encouraged to submit. Just check out the submission guidelines posted on this self-same site.
The size and frequency of publication will depend partially on the quantity and quality of submitted material. At this stage we're gunning for a quarterly book of 70-100 pages but that is not set in stone.
THE MIND'S OVERFLOW ONGOING COMIC SERIES:
The M.O. comic series is older than it should be, for something that's just coming out. I have created, reworked, and remade worlds all without ever putting pen to paper. I do have, however, 50 issues deeply plotted and much more than that resting only in my head.
The story will usually follow the adventures of a character named Key but the comic book is actually a showcase for anything at any moment. Some of the issues are short stories I've written and will just be scripted differently for the book, othes will be about re-occuring characters and their adventures, and so on. In the sixties, a lot of comic books were like pulp magazines that didnt feature the same character or team in every issue but instead had a foundationary cast and the rest was improvised. That is the idea of this book. It should also be noted that most of the characters have over-simplified names (Like a flying worm whose name is Worm). My concern is to tell a good story and not worry about witty code-names (this isn't Pokemon).
Though we usually follow Key, also expect a good deal of time to be spent on some other characters. I'll work on posting some character designs and maybe a timeline at a later date.
