Stoneman at Chancellorsville : The Coming of Age of Union Calvalry
by Ben Fuller Fordney
I hope my book will contribute to the ongoing discussion of the development of Union cavalry in the Civil War. The main point of the book is that Stoneman's Raid at Chancellorsville was significant because it was the beginning of Federal equality with their Confederate foes, especially those who rode with General J.E.B. Stuart. Although this raid had limited strategic value and did not substantially interfere with General Robert E. Lee's army at Chancellorsville, it was conducted by the first Federal independent cavalry corps and contributed to the experience of cavalry commanders and future generals such as John Buford, Wesley Merritt, Judson Kilpatrick, and David McM. Gregg. The graduates of Stoneman's Raid proved their mettle at Brandy Station, Aldie, Middleburg, Upperville, and eventually Gettysburg where Union horsemen fought their Confederate opponents stirrup to stirrup. My book is intended to tell their story of the beginning of the long road to respect and vindication. -- The Author.. |
