“That's The Way I See It” (A self-portrait inspired by David Hockney) By: Nina Zak Laddon

The students will be introduced to David Hockney – a contemporary artist known for his depictions of California-based subject matter, especially swimming pools. They will become familiar with several watercolor techniques and experiment with painting water to use as a background for their photocollage. The results will be a unique self-portrait

“Impressionistic Monet” By: Rosine Foster

The genre of Impressionism will be introduced to the students through a short discussion of Monet's work and the features that make it Impressionistic. The students will explore the art of Impressionism using acrylic paint as the medium and Monet's “Sunset on the Thames” as the motivation. They will create different textures with the use of their brushes and will become familiar with such terms as background, foreground, horizon line, main subject (theme), shadow highlights, reflection and textures.

“Malibu Tiles” The Study of Color and Symmetry By: Phyllis Ferrara

The students will explore the concepts of symmetry using both line and color, and will create a personalized title in the style of Malibu Tile designs. This company operated for many years in Malibu, CA and produced colorful patterned tiles that are widely recognized today as “California Style.”

"Shades of Black and White" By: Freddie Benson

Dimension and shadow, two basic concepts in art, will be explored in this project. Using charcoal pencils on fine quality drawing paper, the students will learn how to create three-dimensional objects on their papers. Using a spotlight on three separate objects the children will observe the shadows created and learn how to capture the depth and realism of these objects in their drawings.

"Grandma Moses: An American Original" By: Maureen Gill

The students will be introduced to original American Art based on the works of Anna Mary Robertson Moses. Her fascinating life story will be presented along with samples of her well-known paintings. Using Tempera paints, the students will recreate a landscape or “life scene,” filled with people and animals going about daily life. Brush stroke techniques, color mixing and layering of colors will also be taught.

“The Design and Creation of Jewelry” Jewelry as Non-Objective Art By: Melinda Moore

The children will learn that non-objective art takes its image from the mind, not from nature the way abstract art does. Thus, we have a true and original expression of the artist. The students will learn a series of processes involved in the creation of jewelry through the execution of their own unique piece.
