The Staffordshire Bull Terrier was first recognized as a separate breed by the AKC in 1974. Prior to that, the American Staffordshire Terrier and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier were considered one breed, the Staffordshire Terrier, which was admitted for registration in 1936. Originally, the breed was known by many names including the half & half, yankee terrier & pit terrier and was used for bull baiting. When that was outlawed in 1835, dog fighting took its place. As time progressed, pit fighting was outlawed but not strictly enforced until the 1930's. Today, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a devoted, loyal, intelligent, reliable, loving, amusing, outgoing, friendly, eager to please companion. It excells in obedience, agility, flyball, weight-pulling, conformation and just about anything you ask of it. The breed is known in England as " The Nanny Dog" or "The Nursemaid's Dog" because of it's genuine fondness and devotion to children. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier makes an unbeatable pet/companion and (sometimes!) watchdog, but if it is a true guard dog you are looking for, this breed is not the one! They generally love ALL people too much to be of any use as a true guard. IT MUST BE NOTED THAT THEY ARE VERY VULNERABLE TO THEFT!!! They also do best as an indoor dog and in colder climates, it is a must, as they have a very short coat with no undercoat to protect them from the weather. Height range for the breed is 14-16" and weight is 24-34 pounds for bitches and 28-38 pounds for dogs. All colors are acceptable except for black/tan and liver. Ears are NOT cropped. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
