following on from my interview with pocket last month, this month i caught up with the incredibly talented nubreed boys from melbourne. nubreed are just about to release an album through mob in the u.k. [with an australian version to follow on vicious] and my word is it good. from the vocal 'nu school' of welcome to the eastern experiments of future proof, to the alien melodics of jaded and the chilled organic funk of neptune beach this album covers quite a diverse range of moods, groves, and sounds. although they've been influenced by everything from house to funk to rock to hip hop and drum and bass one of the great things about nubreed [in my eyes] is the way in which they seem determined to stay open to new sounds and influences. tracks such as bring that sound with its big basslines and short key with its garagey hats are two examples of the way in which the nubreed sound may have evolved since last you looked. check the interview below for more on nubreed... nubreed interview [with thanks to jase from nubreed] the new album? its scheduled for a late october release through mob records with two ep'S coming out first - bring that sound [featuring andy page] and qurious. an australian version of the album [with more vocal tracks] will come out after that in a few months on vicious. was there a driving motif behind the album or was it all just 'lets see what we can come up with'? we consciously wanted to make an album that encompassed all three of our personal influences: hip hop, dnb, rock, breaks, funk, and house. we also wanted to emphasise our performing side [mike and myself emcee and danny sings]. we wanted to emphasise the fact that we write, engineer, perform, and produce all our own tunes which, other than terminalhead and maybe kosheen, not many other breaks acts do. we also wanted to come up with a production style that would sit well with our 'song' writing. that is, something a little more melodic and memorable and has a longer shelf life than our previous dancefloor releases. do you think the nubreed sound is evolving? if so, how? can you define the nubreed sound [even if it's a loose definition?]? ueah its always evolving because we are always listening to new music of all kinds and are constantly picking up new ideas along the way. we couldn't be happier making records, performing, and travelling for a living on our own terms. leonard cohen said sumthin mad like "i aim to get paid for my work and not to work to get paid". as a group we've always tried to achieve that - to the point of being broke ass mofos in the past just to make and buy tunes and equipment. If the music we are making feels right and the music moves us and gets your arse shakin' then we always have fun in the studio. Breakbeat has many faces and we try and give our own take on that. It all depends on our mood at the time. We're like sponges living in Australia because we get music from all over the world which is great. Anything with a fat broken beat n bassline we are into. Our songs are usually very melodic and journey orientated with an emphasis on big drumz. current inspirations / aspirations [for nubreed]? at the moment innovative producers like uncouth youth and dj mutiny, andy page, jaydee and madlib, wah chu ku, bugz in the attic crew, all the local boyz rockin' shit like phil k, luke chable, poxy music... the list goes on. they all inspire us to make the next big record. we're just hanging to make some new tunes since we have been working on the same 13 tracks for the past 10 months! oh, and look out for the nubreed t-shirts!! written any broken beat tracks yet? no, not yet... just a few beat ideas at the moment. we've been buying up heaps online though. not sure how the local crowds are taking to the sound since it's relatively new and people are still trying to get their heads around the snare not being on the two and four!!! though i've been getting into a lot of the darker minimal 'sublow' sound coming from london underground scenes like forward i think i'm addicted to breaks fm and bbc 1xtra radio [j da flex, ras Kwame, richee vee etc]. we've been experimenting with a few side darkgarage, hip hop and house projects with local collaborations with a few dj's, emcees, and producers that may see the light of day soon. we try and make as much music as the day allows. look out for some of our dirty fours releases soon out on vapour recordings with luke chable. we also just finished a major add campaign for hard yakka's relaunch... breakbeats are everywhere!!! |
