The Duvals / Fatty Jones / Motel 6 - Bull and Gate, London, 15th April 2000

This gig was a bit of a surprise to me as I'd forgotten all about it after initially hearing about it weeks ago. I think it might have been Nick that told me about it in the first place as Blocko might have been on the bill as well. Alas, that didn't happen but it was nice to come across the name "Fatty Jones" when flicking through the NME in Bromley.

First band on was Motel 6 who started off fairly promisingly with a fast poppy number. The singer reminded us of Adam from China (The) Drum when he moved around and especially whne he gave himself a round of applause at the end. The female bassist was also very cute (even if that is the expected, politically incorrect thing to say). Unfortunately that first one turned out to be their best song and from then on things went rapidly downhill. The bassist could certainly sing very very well but man, the lead singer was wearing these terrible snake shoes. Hopefully it wasn't real fucking snakeskin. At that point we thought "fuck it" and went off to get more beer. Their set seemed to go on FOREVER.

Next band on were Fatty Jones who were excellent but not as good as I remember. I know that some people think Golly is a fantastic vocalist but I'm not a huge fan to be honest - I think he's slightly off-key 20% of the time and he really needs to lose that fucking awful tracksuit top he insists on wearing! Still, they have some great songs and Dickie Hammond is still an excellent guitarist. So there you go! I can only imagine how good they would be with a second guitarist.

Oh yeah, one thing I have to mention is how much a couple of the new ones played seemed to sound like Leatherface 'castoffs'. Who knows, maybe it's just me reading too much into things as usual.

Special mention for the twat that thought it would be a funny idea to pull my cap down over my eyes. If you're reading this (somehow I doubt it) it's not a good idea to do that to total strangers because if that had been Lloyd you'd done that to I doubt very much that you'd still be alive today.

Nick left at the end of Fatty Jones but I decided to stick around and watch The Duvals. And I'm glad I did to be honest. The Duvals played a storming 12-song set with some great hooks and vocals as usual. Punk City was really strong and Newington Green is a song that's quickly becoming a favourite of mine. One of the songs was dedicated to Dickie 'the beast' Hammond - unfortunately, the name of that particular song is actually "Frankie Warsaw"! Nevermind eh? And also nevermind that I made the mistake of going to the bar for a pint just before The Duvals played "Stomach" - one of my all-time favourites. Bugger.

No merch on sale unfortunately as I was looking forward to getting my hands on a copy of the Fatty Jones EP. No pile of Fracture's either! Arse - I still need to get the latest issue :)
